The Fourth of July is a time to celebrate America’s Independence and what makes this nation the “the land of the free and the home of the brave.” Over the past year a certain Presidential candidate (Trump) has said America is not great anymore. Whether you are a Republican or a Democrat, everyone has their opinions on the state of the U.S., but the Fourth of July is a time to put aside these differences and celebrate The United States of America. Here are a few things that make America great:

1. Our Freedom

This is the most important thing to celebrate about America. As Americans, we have freedom of religion, freedom of speech, the right to an education, etc. These rights are not always available to citizens in other countries and we should keep that fact in perspective as we celebrate the Fourth.

2. Our Contributions to Technology

Creativity has led to innovation in America. American inventors are responsible for the first air plane, car, computer, and more. Take a little time out to appreciate the inventions you use on a regular basis.

3. Literary Contributions

American creativity has also led to beautiful literary works. There are many novels that could be considered “The Great American Novel.” A few of the numerous American authors to celebrate are: Edgar Allen Poe, Sylvia Plath, and Steven King.

4. Musical Contributions

American artists have contributed to multiple music genres such as Rock, Country, Jazz, and Blues. American musicians such as Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Louis Armstrong, Elvis, Aretha Franklin, and Taylor Swift have changed the music industry with their songwriting and entertaining styles.

5. Football

And I don’t mean European Football i.e. Soccer. American Football provides a great pastime typically watched with family, friends, and a beer, which concludes with the Super Bowl (an iconic American event).

6. The Food

American cuisine such as burgers, hot dogs, gumbo, and Tex-Mex are dishes to be grateful for during the summer barbeque season.

7. Our Landscape

America has Instagram worthy beaches, mountain tops, parks, and more that make our landscape special.

8. USA Olympic Team

Over the decades, the U.S. has produced a variety of strong athletes to represent our country in sports varying from hockey (shout out to the 1980 hockey team) to swimming. Go U.S.A 2016!

9. Baseball

Is a true American pastime. The U.S. has produced talented athletes ranging from Babe Ruth to the more modern Derek Jeter.

10. Our Troops

These are the men and women who sacrifice their lives, so that we may enjoy our freedom and more! Thank you to all who have served or are currently serving.

Contrary to certain beliefs, America is great. The U.S does have more work to do, especially with the latest gun-control debate, but there are many things to be proud of as an American during this holiday weekend!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
