10 Reactions I Had To The Concert For Charlottesville

Or as I affectionately dub it, "the Justin Timberlake feat. Stevie Wonder, and others also, concert."

10 Reactions I Had To The Concert For Charlottesville
UVA Today

Unless you don't attend UVa or have been living in Charlottesville under a rock for the last month, on Sunday 9/24 there was a huge benefit concert at Scott Stadium called the Concert for Charlottesville: An Evening of Music and Unity. Dave Matthews Band organized this event to raise money for the victims of the rallies on August 11th and 12th and lift community spirits in their aftermath. As a fortunate attendee of this concert, I experienced a multitude of emotions that I can only properly convey with GIFs and brief, thoughtful captions. They ranged from minor confusion to pure jubilation, but all contributed to a magical evening, and I have a feeling that I had many similar concert reactions as others in attendance that night.

1. It appears that they're not checking my ticket section.. 524 to 108, here I come!

I, and many others, caught on pretty early in the night that many ushers were not checking people's ticket sections in the lower levels. This proved to be a relief for many concertgoers who had stressed about not knowing anyone in their section or not having an ideal view of their childhood idols. Honestly, I think this was for the best since all of the sections were general admission anyway.

2. Cage the Elephant is pretty hyped for 6 pm, but I can play along until it gets dark.

I kid here because I actually loved Cage the Elephant's set. I keep meaning to become a bigger fan of them and I just haven't gotten around to it, but maybe now that I've seen them perform at a huge stadium concert I'll finally start listening to their music. They were a lot of fun, and whoever decided to film their set in black-and-white made a nice aesthetic choice that set the evening's throwback mood nicely.

3. Chris Martin is singing my childhood in front of me and I'm not sure whether to cry, sing along, or flail excitedly.

It was pretty cool to hear a live acoustic version of "Viva La Vida," a song that I've been pseudo-angstily listening to while walking to school since 2009. If I had a nickel for every time Chris Martin prefaced a song by saying, "This is probably going to be awful" and then killed it, I'd have several nickels. As the first of the surprise guests that night, he and Coldplay guitarist Jonny Buckland did not disappoint.

4. Ok, the Roots have been playing for half an hour and there's no sign of Jimmy Fallon. Maybe my confident assumption that he'd show up was actually wrong.

In hindsight, it's pretty amusing that I and so many others assumed that since Justin Timberlake and the Roots were both on the concert bill, Jimmy Fallon would also make an appearance. I really don't know how he would have musically contributed to this event, so his absence makes sense, but I was hopeful till the end of the night that he and Justin Timberlake would revive their "History of Rap" bit in front of the Charlottesville crowd.

5. Oh look, it's one of the guys from Duck Dynasty... wait is THAT Chris Stapleton?

I don't know what I was expecting, but I genuinely did not know what Chris Stapleton looked like until I saw him on stage at the concert. I think I thought he and Luke Bryan were the same people, but in that moment, I knew they were not. He was definitely good, though not my normal musical taste, but his beard was certainly impressive. Still, I used his set to bite the bullet and brave the lines for overpriced stadium food.

6. This concession line better hurry up because if I miss even a second of Ariana or Justin, I'm gonna lose it.

I was less worried about not singing along to every word of "Side to Side" than I was concerned about not being able to find my seat again in the craziness of Ariana's set. Luckily I managed to put my fries down just in time for her to hit a crazy high note so that her vocal power alone couldn't knock them out of my hands.

7. I take back everything I've ever said about Ariana Grande's voice because she sounds AMAZING live.

I've always thought Ariana Grande had kind of an annoying voice, but I have to say she really sounds phenomenal live. Her voice is extremely precise and powerful, and she commanded the stage like a true professional. I was actually a little disappointed that she only performed four songs, but as soon as the next musical act started I instantly forgot about this disappointment.

8. Is it just me, or was this event basically just a Justin Timberlake concert? Because he's all I remember.

If any GIF most accurately describes my reaction to anything at the concert, it's this one. I was more excited to see JT than I was to see everyone else put together, and by the time he finished a monster set that included Suit and Tie, Cry Me A River, Rock Your Body, Can't Stop The Feeling, Sexyback, and Mirrors, I was thoroughly shook to the core. He was definitely the biggest showstopper of the night, other than a special guest that appeared at the very end (hint, he was very Superstitious).

9. Looks like the rumors of Justin Bieber and Chance the Rapper appearing weren't true...

I'm honestly not really a fan of Justin Bieber or Chance the Rapper, but with day-of rumors swirling around that they were in Charlottesville, I admittedly was looking forward to the insane crowd reaction that they would have drawn. Still, I think Stevie Wonder's surprise appearance more than made up for their absence.

10. Stevie Wonder is literally preaching to 60,000 people, and I must submit to his excellence.

Normally I don't love when musicians lecture their crowds about the state of the world, but when it's Stevie Wonder relating his lack of sight to the how his mom wished she'd live to witness him seeing a better world, I was all in. It felt like he was giving a very passionate sermon that the entire crowd agreed with, and I am still in awe that I was in the presence of such an icon.

I've always wanted to attend a huge stadium concert, and this certainly set the bar high. Though a concert can only do so much to actually solve problems of institutional racism and white supremacy, gatherings like this remind people of how good it feels to be united in love with their community. The concert reminded me of many of my favorite memories, and it gave 60,000 people an outlet to gleefully sing their hearts out for five hours. All in all, the Concert for Charlottesville was full of many moments that I will never forget.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
