As the end of my freshman year draws near, I realized I have acquired an all-new vocabulary. Coming to college, I have learned new words and terms that don't make sense to those outside of Samford's community. Along with these words comes unique traditions. From the ring-by-spring phenomenon to the tradition of jumping in a fountain, I've learned just to accept some of the oddities of campus life. I've been asked questions back home about the goings on here at Samford, but here are 10 questions that you will only hear on Samford's campus.
1. Are you going to Convo today?
You know you should, but you really don't want to.
2. Who do you have for CP?
Followed by an, "Oh yeah, we didn't have to read that for my class," or "I've heard they're really hard."
3. Are you doing Samford Gives Back?
Waking up early on a Saturday to do community service doesn't sound like it would be appealing to college students, but free t-shirts and Convo credit are major motivators for students here.
4. Why is the Caf full of children?
Seriously. The ice cream is already hectic enough without a swarm of 30 middle schoolers fighting over the chocolate.
5. Is there anything good in the Caf today?
Usually not. Sometimes, though, the Caf does pretty well. (French toast night, I'm looking at you!).
6. Why is that in the fountain?
Applies to trash, floaties and Mr. Samford competitors. You never know what you'll run into in Ben Brown.
7. Are you going to do Step Sing?
Because we start talking about next year's Step Sing the day after this year's Step Sing. It's a way of life.
8. Is there convo credit for that?
Anytime a friend asks you to attend a lecture or event that sounds boring and mildly intellectual.
9. Are you doing Jan Term this year?
With options to take classes, study abroad or just hibernate at home for another month, Jan Term plans are always fun to discuss.
10. Why do so many high schoolers take prom pictures here?
Do they even go here?
I would like to apologize to all of my friends and family who don't go to Samford and have heard me toss around Samford words or talk about events on campus like they're common knowledge. When you live in the bubble, it's easy to forget that not everyone knows what you're talking about and what all these acronyms mean. To any future Samford students, study up on this list. You will be asked these questions, so have an answer prepared.
