The Pine tree state is a beautiful place known for many things. It's the "vacation land," it's "the way life should be" and it's filled with many beautiful sights. Here are 10 places worth the adventure!
1. Old Orchard Beach
Spend a day at the ocean in Old Orchard. Get your tan on, and enjoy the salty air and cool waves. Take a walk down the boardwalk and enjoy some of the best pizza and fries. Enjoy some rides at Palace Play Land! Even stay late on a Thursday and enjoy the fireworks.
2. Coos Canyon
Take a trip down to Byron, Maine, to enjoy the beautiful sights of the Swift River. You can enjoy the view from a lovely rest stop, or even spend a weekend at a camp ground along side the Coos canyon. This is the perfect adventure for the nature lover.
3. Grafton Notch State Park
A beautiful state park, located in Newry. Enjoy a scenic backpacking adventure on one of the six walking trails, or enjoy the lovely water falls, such as Screw Auger Falls and Mother Walker Falls. Or, enjoy the Moose Cave, which is a 45-foot canyon, disappearing into a granite cave. And when you need a break, you can rest at the picnic area for lunch!
4. Acadia National Park
Another breathtaking national park, Acadia is the first Eastern national park! Take a hike up Cadillac Mountain to enjoy the sunrise, enjoy the sights and sounds and Bubble Pond, kayak or canoe in Eagle or Echo Lake or if you're feeling really adventurous, take a walk on the ocean path and view Thunder Hole.
5. Old Port
A district in Portland, known for its cobbled streets, old brick buildings and many bars! Enjoy delicious Maine seafood, the little shops along the way and the busy night life of full bars!
6. Portland Headlight
Also located in Portland, enjoy a little bit of Maine's history on the rocky edges of the ocean and breathtaking lighthouse and museum!
7. Ogunquit Museum of American Art
Enjoy the art of nature as well as handmade art, such as sculptures and paintings, right on the coastline of Ogunquit!
8. Fort Knox
For the history buffs, Fort Knox is a historic 124-acre fort on the banks of the Penobscot River, located in Prospect. This fort was an Artillery during the American Civil War. This famous fort is also said to be haunted!
9. Desert of Maine
Forty acres of "desert," surrounded by pine trees located near Free Port! You can play disc golf in the dunes, walk the nature trails or spend some time camping in this unlikely Maine site!
10. Bailey Island
Enjoy the day, and take a relaxing boat ride out to Bailey Island, located in the Casco Bay (also a part of Harspwell). Famous for the Bailey Island Bridge, the Mackerel Cove (one of Maine's most photographed places), the "giant steps" rocks and last but not least Lands End, a beautiful rocky beach at the end of the island.
