1. Lobster Roll at Bite Into Maine
Obviously, if you're in Maine, you need to try the best lobster roll around which you can find in Cape Elizabeth. You may be a little wary at first since it's coming from a food cart, but these lobster rolls are overflowing with meat and amazing and, to top it all off, you have some crazy good views of the ocean and the Portland Head Light.
2. Pier Fries
Old Orchard Beach is home to some of the best fries in Maine. I don't know what it is that makes them so special, but along with the vinegar and ketchup, I could eat an entire box to myself.
3. Fresh Maine Blueberries
You can't go anywhere in Maine in the summer without being too far from a farm where you can pick some fresh blueberries. There's truly nothing like chowing into some fresh Maine blueberries.
4. Maine Maple Sunday
Always the fourth Sunday in March, farms all over Maine offer up some of the best maple treats you can think of. Whether it be maple cider donuts, maple apple crisp, or straight maple syrup poured over some vanilla ice cream, you won't be disappointed. Living in Maine has definitely turned me into a maple syrup snob. Mrs. Butterworth, who?
5. Goldenrod Kisses
In 1896, a little candy shop was built in York, Maine, and is still standing over 100 years later in the same spot. Watch fresh salt water taffy being made daily from the windows outside and then head inside to try some out or get some delicious penny candy. (Wait, penny candy is still a thing?)
6. Scoop Deck
With over 75 flavors, Wells is home to one of the biggest ice cream destinations in Maine. From Blueberry Pancake (described on the website as Shortcake pieces in ice cream flavored with Maine maple syrup w/ Maine wild blueberry ripple) to cult favorites like Graham Central Station (Graham cracker flavored ice cream w/ a graham cracker variegate & chocolate covered crisp candy), there's something for everyone.
7. Shain's of Maine
I like ice cream a lot, OK? Whether you're getting a Seadog biscuit (two cookies with vanilla ice cream in between), a Shiver (sherbet ice cream blended with Sprite), or a cone of any of their huge menu, Shain's is always a classic.
8. The Holy Donut
Instead of using flour, these amazing donuts are made with—you'll never guess it—mashed potatoes. Named by Thrillist as among the "best donuts in America," these innovative treats will keep you coming back with flavors like pomegranate and maple bacon. The Holy Donut has two locations in Portland.
9. Maine Squeeze
While you're in Old Port for those yummy donuts, stop by this little smoothie cafe. With no processed sugars, artificial flavors, or syrups, the website claims to help "heal, detoxify, and rejuvenate your body." The cafe has three locations and also sells three-day juice cleanses.
10. Duckfat
Fitting with its name, this Portland restaurant is well known for its fries cooked in duckfat. The restaurant also has delicious paninis and milkshakes and you might even catch Tina Fey, who is a big fan.
