Papers are piling up, nights are getting late and you're running on caffeine—it's finals week. Studying for hours on end is exhausting-- you end up just staring blankly at the pages in your textbook contemplating the meaning of life. Music helps me feel productive and keeps me focused on the task at hand. I have composed a list of songs you should add to your Spotify playlist. For me, I enjoy smooth and chill songs.
1. "Gravity" by John Mayer
This song, a single from his 2006 album "Continuum," has a blues-y, soft rock sound. If you are a fan, you already know the kind of vibe that Mayer's music gives off. If not, take a listen. I'm sure you'll enjoy the laid back tune while you're working on your thesis.
2. "Slow And Steady" by Of Monsters and Men
Another chill song, this one is from the 2011 album "My Head Is An Animal." Their popular single, "Little Talks," is from the same album. Different from the other, more upbeat sound, "Slow And Steady" is a calmer tune to help you focus.
3. "Work Song" by Hozier
Released to radio in early 2015, this song was featured on the trailer for the Nicolas Sparks' movie "The Longest Ride," increasing it's popularity. This track is another blues-y, soulful tune with a great beat.
4. "Skinny Love" by Bon Iver
Another early single, from back in 2007, this is from the album "For Emma, Forever Ago." The vocals are almost chilling and it's another slow-paced song. In regards to popular culture, this was used in the first episode of the fifth season of "Grey's Anatomy."(Birdy does an amazing cover of this.)
5. "Bright Lights and Cityscapes" by Sara Bareilles
One of my favorite songs to draw to, this one is from Bareilles' 2012 album "Once Upon Another Time." I love the steady background beat and beautiful voice of Bareilles. It's another slower song; perfect for concentration.
6. "Flightless Bird/American" by Iron & Wine
Featured in Twilight, this 2007 song is from Iron And Wine's album "The Shepherd's Dog." Incredibly slow and calming, this one is another great addition for your playlist.
7. "Everybody" by Ingrid Michaelson
By now, you probably want a more upbeat tune to listen to. From Michaelson's 2009 album, also titled "Everybody," this is a feel-good song. It's an indie pop song that puts a little pep in your step.
8. "Dream Team" by Niykee Heaton
Featured on her album, "The Bedroom Tour Playlist," released this March, this single in a slightly different genre than the other previously listed. Once again, the beat puts a groove in your studying. (This song is also featured on my "Getting Ready To Go Out" playlist.)
9. "Tell Me" by He Is We
From the band's 2011 EP "Skip To The Good Part," this "pop" song is one that should definitely make it on the playlist. The song is light and sweet, with Rachel Taylor's gorgeous vocals filling your ears.
10. "I See Fire" by Ed Sheeran
Commissioned for the soundtrack of "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug," "I See Fire" is another laid-back track-- mostly acoustic sounding. Make sure you have this one on your playlist. (Also check out Jasmine Thompson's cover.)
