Four days after you turn 19, you will have been alive for 10 million minutes. You will have had 10 million minutes on this earth to interact with and impact other people. The thing that is funny is that our life comes down to just a few moments.
For me, some of my most important moments consist of the moment I found out my dad was cancer free, the moment I was accepted into my dream school and the moment I received a bid from my top sorority. These are just a few, but, in total, I can think of 10 moments that have changed my life forever.
If you assume these moments can come down to a single minute, then that would mean that the biggest moments of your life would only be .0001 percent of your time before the age of 19. While I believe that there were only 10 moments who defined who I was as a person, that doesn't mean that I haven't learned things along the way.
So here are 10 pieces of advice I've learned in my 10 million minutes alive.
1. We cannot waste our time doing something we don't love or being with people who we are not comfortable with.
This life is too short to be someone you're not. Even if the world around you seems to not be like you, trust me there are people in this world like you. Don't waste anymore time being someone that you're not comfortable with. Wear what you want, act how you want, and be with who you want.
2. Be happy with life, don't waste the moments you're given because you aren't guaranteed anything in this world.
Many people avoid doing things that they're scared of, like accomplishing dreams and goals, because they believe there is always tomorrow. In reality you never know if you'll have tomorrow to accomplish what you want. If you want something, act on it quick.
3. Appreciate the moment you are in, chances are you'll never have another moment like it.
I hate endings so I cope by saying that I will come back to a certain moment. In reality no moment will ever be the same. Yes you will always have worries for tomorrow, but leave them out of those important moments. Enjoy the present.
4. Carpe Diem, Seize the Day.
This is pretty self explanatory, and like number two. I am saying it again so you know it is important.
5. If you have an opportunity to hang out with friends or sleep, go hang out with friends.
You will always have time to sleep, but a lot of times a memory will never be remade. If you have the opportunity to go out and meet new people especially in your first few weeks of college, go out. These will be memories you will keep for a life time.
6. Grades are important, but if you bomb a test it is not the end of the world, get back up and keep working hard.
Everyone falls down sometimes. It doesn't matter if you fall, but how you get back up.
7. Don't spend time pondering on things that could've been, focus on the situation at hand.
Focus on the facts you are given, don't waste time wishing for a new outcome. Wishing won't do anything to help the situation, but acting on it will.
8. Everyone makes a mistake every once in a while and that is okay.
Don't waste your time ragging on yourself for making a minor error. It may feel like the world is ending at the time, but in reality it will all be okay I promise.
9. Volunteering does in fact make a difference in peoples lives, do it at least once a year.
Volunteering impacts the community around you in ways you cannot imagine. Please get out and give back.
10. Finding good friends to go through life with you is important.
Life is about having fun, and finding people to share memories with. Finding a group of people early on to share the important moments with will make life so much more fun.
So when you hit your 10 million minute on earth, what do you want to have accomplished? If it's not what you've hoped the good news is you have an opportunity to get up tomorrow and try again. Whatever it is you decide to do, I hope it's great.
