10 Lessons I Learned From My Dad
Sabrina Miller

My dad was my first hero, first love, first everything. To this day, he still is and always will be. Every day I always learn something new from him, about life, love and simply anything and everything. Here are some of the lessons that I’ve learned.

  • Push yourself. You will never know what you can accomplish if you don’t go out of your comfort zone. Opportunities are limitless, you just have to see them and aim to achieve them, and to do that, you need to push yourself.
  • Move on with life. If you keep reliving the past, you miss the present. The past is exactly that, the past. It is time to move on, live your life in the present.
  • Speak up. If something is bothering you, or makes you feel uncomfortable or anything; then tell the person about it. Chances are that it is not only you that feels that way.
  • Family is everything. Your family members are your first friends and the people that would do anything to protect. At least someone in your family will have your back.
  • Believe in yourself. Don’t rely on others to believe in you to do anything. You have to believe in yourself, even when no one else does. It’s hard, but it is something that you need to learn to do.
  • Marry someone who deserves you. You will know when someone deserves you, they will treat you like their everything. They may irritate you at times, but they are worth it.
  • Honesty is the best policy. No one likes a liar. No matter how much the truth may hurt, that is the best way to go. Lying is only going to make the situation worse.
  • Helping others is great, but don’t be taken advantage of. Many people enjoy using people, helping is one thing but being used is another. Being taken advantage of isn’t worth it, especially if it upsets or hurts you in the end.
  • Be respectful. Many people lack respect, it is rare anymore. If you want someone to respect you, you have to show respect back.
  • Ignorant people aren’t worth the time, or breath. Why spend time with people who don’t want to spend time with you, or people who are completely ignorant and nasty towards you? You don’t need negativity in your life. Surround yourself with people who care instead of people who harm you. Those types of people aren’t worth any of your time.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
