It's that time of year again… Valentine's Day. This year you may be going solo, or maybe you just really hate this holiday. Here's a list of holidays to look forward to and get out of the Valentine's-Day-funk.
1. Arbor Day
Arbor Day, which is celebrated on the last Friday in April, is probably one of the most underrated holidays. You celebrate by literally planting a tree. That's it. But let's face it, where would we be without trees?
2. Presidents' Day
This year we got lucky because Presidents' Day falls the Monday after Valentine's Day. Think of it as a day to recover from Valentine's festivities. This holiday, celebrated on the third Monday of February, commemorates the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. The US typically celebrates by giving you a day off and a sale at your favorite store!
3. Election Day
Election Day is celebrated the first Tuesday after the second Monday in November. Confusing, right? Basically, all you need to know about this day is that most schools get it as a day off and if you're 18, you can vote!
4. Mardi Gras
If you didn't already know, Mardi Gras has already happened in 2016. However, no need to fret, because you can party twice as hard next year. Mardi Gras is celebrated the day before the Christian feast day Ash Wednesday, and fun fact, is nicknamed "Fat Tuesday." New Orleans is a popular place to celebrate Mardi Gras with parades, beads, and an endless amount of fun.
5. Black Friday/Cyber Monday
So it's very hard to consider these two days holidays, but the US celebrates them as just that. Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, and Cyber Monday, the Monday after Thanksgiving, are the two biggest shopping days in America. You'll find plenty of sales and practically participate in a hunger games-esque battle to find the perfect gift for your sister.
6. Flag Day
Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It is this day in 1777 when the US finally adopted their famous stars and stripes. If you're ever wondering of a way to celebrate, head on over to Appleton, Wisconsin, which has a fun parade and is considered the "Most Patriotic City in America."
7. Grandparents' Day
Grandparents' Day is celebrated the first Sunday after Labor Day. It may seem like a dumb holiday, but never forget that without your grandparents you wouldn't exist.
8. Town Meeting Day
This is only a holiday celebrated in Vermont, but it definitely deserves some celebration, right? It's celebrated the first Tuesday in March AND you get a day off from work, to participate in, yes, a town meeting.
9. Earth Day
Earth Day is an annual holiday celebrated on April 22. The day started in 1970 and is celebrated today all around the world. Take this day to literally praise the ground you walk on and hug a tree.
10. Family Day
Family Day (the Friday after Thanksgiving) is only celebrated in two states in America. However, you don't need a national holiday to let your family know you love them. Whether it be your mom, dad, brother, or even close friend, take this day and every day to let them know you love them.
Because really, who even needs Valentine's Day?
