College is already a tough thing to handle, so when you add on all of the extra onto that, it's quite impossible. Extra as in the long list of pressures that college students carry on their back throughout each day. Society tells us that we have to be this intelligent student, yet we have to succeed in every other area. Failure is not acceptable. However, we're human too. The amount of pressure put on college students is overwhelming. How do we achieve every little thing that is asked of us? Here are just a few of the many things that society slams on us:
1. Receive a high GPA.
This tends to be understandable, as it is college, but we will not receive an A in every class nor will we be perfect.
2. Take as many credits as possible.
15 credits is a lot for a semester, but people want even more from us.
3. Stay active.
God forbid we gain the freshman or even sophomore 15. We have to exercise more according to our peers and society.
4. Eat healthy.
With staying active, we have to eat well too. This can be difficult when on a meal plan or even living in a dorm. It's not like we have a full set kitchen available.
5. Have a job.
Full time student? That's not even enough. We're told to pick up a job or two.
6. Stay involved.
Join as many clubs and activities as possible. So we are told.
7. Study, Study, Study.
We're expected to live in the library.
8. Stay busy.
Free time isn not longer allowed, we must stay busy.
9. Make time for friends.
You don't go to the club every thursday? Well then, you're not really a college student.
10. Be perfect.
There is no room for mistakes. We must be perfect in absolutely everything.
It is evident that college is more than just about earning a degree. So the next time you see a stressed out college student, give them a hug. They will need it. This isn't healthy nor should it be expected of us. We all need time to breathe. Society simply does not allow that of us Why? Because this has become the norm of college students.
