Let's admit it. Everyone loves dogs or at least has a special place in their hearts for the magical things we call puppies. Personally, I have a soft spot for corgis and all the greatness that they have to offer to the world as sweet fluffers. While they may be small in size, corgis are able to make up with it through their special personality and history. Here is a list of fun facts that you may not about these special puppers.
1. Corgi means "dwarf dog."
In the Welsh language, "Cor" means dwarf and "gi" means dog.
2. They share an ancestry with Huskies.
Although they don't share the same size as Huskies, they do share common doggie brothers and mindsets.
3. You could get fined for stealing a corgi.
Under ancient Welsh law, one could face harsh punishments for stealing one of these dogs.
4. Corgis are pretty smart.
They are the 11th smartest dog breed. They are able to follow commands on the first try 85% of the time and learn commands in as short as five repetitions.
5. They have been part of the British Royal Family for over 70 years.
Queen Elizabeth II had over 30 corgis since childhood.
6. Despite their height, they are actually very athletic
They were originally herders and are surprisingly fast runners.
7. There are two different breeds of corgis
The two different breeds are known as the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. Pembrokes have straighter legs and pointier ears.
8. Southern California hosts a giant corgi meet-up
SoCal Corgi Beach Day started in 2012. The first event only had 12 attendees while the last one had over 600. Some owners dress up their dogs in costumes - such as sharks.
9. They actually make great watchdogs
This is due to their attentive nature and loud bark.
10. Myth says they come from fairies
A folklore says that corgis came from a fairy kingdom. The story suggests that a fairy coach could be seen pulled by a group of corgis making it quite magical.
