Freshman year is coming to an end and as those final study sessions and textbooks come to close, a lot is on a freshman's mind. Summer is on the horizon yet it is still quite a bittersweet feeling leaving college for the next few months. This is what's going on through most of our minds.
1. We aren't going to be freshman anymore.
(Yes!) Finally the horrible stigma against freshman will be dropped from your shoulders. But it is kind of semisweet, isn't it? No moreexcuses to be the craziest one at a party or get, "Freshman!" yelled at you when your walking down the streets. Ah, memories. On a serious note, it is crazy to believe that you are already done with one-fourth of the best time of your life and one step closer to being an adult. Plus, now you have to deal with all the incoming freshmen next year who think they are all that (groans even though you were totally that freshman). But pat yourself on the back for a job well done on not failing freshman year!
2. Thank God, it's almost summer!
I know we all love college but you're not fooling anyone if you aren't excited for summer break. Classes are hard in college and it can some times be incredibly stressful. So summer is a good way to relax and catch up on more Netflix than you already do at school (even though that is more than you would like to admit)! So get excited to chill out or whatever you want because it is summer break!
3. Ugh. Finals.
Self-explanatory. Finals suck and bring down everyone. There is nothing worse that a beautiful day wasted spending it inside the library. Finals make everyone sad and the only thing that gets people through them is break on the other side. Don't worry because you got this, and if you don't just be happy you can avoid the grades all summer back at home.
4. How am I supposed to pack my life away?
On top of studying for finals, schools make you pack up your dorm in a max time of 24 hours after your finals. After finally making your dorm feel like home and not a slightly brighter prison, you have to take it all down and pack it away. If the stress of finals wasn't enough for you, think about four girls moving out of one room at the exact same time. Yeah, you can cry now. Yes, moving out of the dorm should be a celebration to moving onto better times and living spaces but it gets really sad seeing everyone take down decorations. Dorms begin to look the way they did at the beginning of the year and trust me, that is quite sad.
5. I don't know how I am going to function without my college friends.
Another super sad feeling. The people you have been spending most waking moments with will be far away from you for quite awhile. You will all be doing your own things and hanging out with old friends. It is definitely a sad time saying goodbye. The good thing is that you will see them in the fall and it will probably be the same as before you left. Still, its OK to start the water works if necessary.
6. But I can't wait to see my friends and family at home this summer!
It will be nice to go home, at least for awhile. You will reconnect with close friends and talk about all of your college adventures and see the high school friends you left behind. It will also be really nice to see your parents and siblings even if you get annoyed by them. It is hard being apart from family for so long and these are awesome people who are going to unconditionally love you. It is also nice not to share bathrooms with all your neighbors and sleep in your own room. So try to enjoy being home, go hug your dog at least.
7. I can't wait to do...!
Hopefully, this summer you will be doing something! Even if it just means seeing how many "How I Met Your Mother" episodes you can watch in a row without checking the time, get excited for that event! Some of you may be going abroad, working, spending time with family, or even still going to school. Either way, summer is more relaxed and nicer weather than the school year so you can celebrate that! I guess summer vacation is not as amazing as you once thought it to be in elementary school, but c'mon -- it is still pretty awesome. So go do something this summer!
8. Weekends are not going to be the same as college weekends.
Ugh, yes. Gone are the extended weekend party plans of the school year. Bars will be filled with parents back at home and house parties are kept to a minimum for fear of cops. Sadly there is no turning up in your house with your parents watching the news on a Thursday night in the living room. So enjoy what parties you have at home, your girl's wine nights and what not. It won't be the same but that might actually be a good thing. But maybe count the days till your next time going out at school in the fall.
9. I wonder how different next fall will be.
You won't see the same people down the hall or in the elevator as you did all last year. You will lose touch with some people and you'll met new people next year: that is just life. Some of the people who were your best friends last year won't be next year and some people you don't even know yet will be better friend than you will ever expect. It will be the same school but classes will be different, living spaces will be different, and you will have different friends. But change is good and I would welcome it with open arms next year if I were you.
10. I can't wait for next year!
Despite every emotional roller coaster that is the end of the school year I hope you're enjoying it. And I hope school makes you excited to see what is next year! So get excited because you still have three more years of this. Pour yourself a glass of alcohol (if you have the identification to prove your age). It doesn't matter what kind because you are still, after all, a freshman.
