Moms are the best. This isn't a poetic, profound, or philosophical observation, it's just a fact. Whether your mom is biological, an aunt, grandparent, guardian, or other, the matriarchy rules. Moms are teachers, healers, bankers, rule makers, chefs, refs, taxi services, helpers, and friends, and moms on television are no different. They reflect the very ladies in our lives we admire so much, and they help in raising a nation of viewers. Having just celebrated Mother's Day 2016, keep the lady love alive by admiring the moms of television.
The Best Moms:
1. Lorelai Gilmore
Teen parents get a bad rap, but you'll never meet a better mom than Lorelai Gilmore from "Gilmore Girls." She's smart, sassy, strong, and above all, she loves her daughter.
Best mom quote: "Parents' Weekend is for lame-o parents whose kids hate them so they need a school sanctioned event so they all spend some time together. My kid likes me. I can go to Yale anytime I want. Fifty-one weekends of the year is my parent's weekend."
2. Linda Belcher
Mom to three of the best kids of television, nay, of the world, Linda's got a pretty sweet mom gig. Still, she doesn't take advantage of this and pours every ounce of love and fun into the lives of her husband and children (and little porcelain babies).
Best mom quote: "Don't take too long. It's the kids' turn to do the dishes, and we have to clean them again before we go to bed."
3. Clair Huxtable
Clair Huxtable is a boss - she is a pillar of strength at home and at work, and she WERKS IT. Her marriage is built on love, respect, and silliness, and the family she raises follows suit. While it seems impossible, her intelligence outmatches her beauty, and her heart is just as golden.
Best mom quote: "Oh, that’s nice. I am a woman, who is black, but I am also a human being, who is an attorney, a mother of five, and somewhat knowledgeable about history, which is why I thought I was invited here. But when you look at me, this is all you see in me, a black woman?"
4. Reba
While I wanted to give this spot to my personal hero, Morticia Addams, I don't know how many millennials will be familiar with the Addams Family television show, and a quick Facebook poll proved that everyone love Reba. (And while I'm sure we all love Anjelica Huston's Morticia, this post is dedicated to moms of television, and Reba is one of the best television moms to date.)
Dealing with divorce, single motherhood, and bridging two families who used to be one, Reba handles her life with lots of snark and even more grace. Plus, she has the catchiest theme song of any show running on daytime syndication.
Best mom quote: Reba: "You are a beautiful young woman." Kyra: "Or maybe you just raised me right. That and I watch a lot of '7th Heaven.'"
5. Debra Barone
Everybody likes Raymond, but everybody loves Debra Barone. Debra represents a lot of moms – overwhelmed with keeping up with her house and raising kids with a husband who puts in a quarter of what she does. She doesn't always get it right, but what mom does? Debra is tough, she's a great mom, and God bless, she puts up with Marie. With in-laws like Debra's who live right across the street, she's truly a shining example of what the best moms are made of. This brings us to the other side of the spectrum: the worst moms on the silver screen.
Best mom quote: "So no wonder the kid writes stories! I should be writing stories! My life is a gothic novel. And until you have lived in that house with all of them in there with you, day after day, week after week, year after friggin' year, then you are in no position to judge me!"
The Worst Moms:
1. Lucille Bluth (also Malory Archer)
*Ahhh!* Jessica Walter is the best worst mother television has seen. Lucille Bluth of "Arrested Developement" is an alcoholic narcissist, and Malory Archer of the cartoon series Archer, voiced by Walter, isn't much better. In her terrible ways, Lucille Bluth (aka Lucille I, aka "mother" - to be read in Buster's voice) is truly an icon.
Best mom quote: "She'd love to get at me any way she could. That’s why she’s been flirting with G.O.B. She’s trying to prove that she’s closer to my children than I am, but the joke’s on her because she doesn’t know how little I care for G.O.B."
2. Lois Griffin
Lois could be considered a bad mom forever breaking with Peter, but letting her youngest son (who wants to murder her) play with and build weapons, and completely abusing her daughter doesn't help her case. Though she has moments of sincerity and is a saint compared to her husband, Lois is the best of the worst moms.
Best mom quote: Lois Griffin: "Oh, what about this, Meg? A pink baby-tee that says "Little Slut." That seems pretty hip."<
Meg Griffin: "I don't know if that's really me, Mom."
Lois Griffin: "Well, they've got one that says "Porn Star" and another that says "Sperm Dumpster." And they're all written in glitter."
3. The Wine Moms
The moms of "Pretty Little Liars" are sweet, supportive, and loving, but they're also totally irresponsible and negligent. They've stood around a kitchen drinking wine as their daughters have been cyber and irl bullied for SIX seasons.
Best mom quote: "I just hope you didn't get the bad decision gene from me."
4. Constance Langdon
Okay, coming from "American Horror Story," it is probably expected that Constance wouldn't be a good egg. However, Constance had the opportunity to garner sympathy with a genuine love for her daughter, but even that was tarnished by abuse.
Best mom quote: "They say when a parent dies, a child feels his own mortality, but when a child dies, it's immortality that a parent loses."
5. Norma Bates
You saw this one coming, didn't you? Is Norma tragic? Yes. But is Norma the creepiest, most neurotic mother to grace cable networking? Also yes. So much yes that the story she yields is too much to die with Hitchcock, and the A&E series is one of the best on air today.
Best mom quote: "You spend your days equally mooning over a dead teacher and taking apart dead animals. It's just weird. It's not right, Norman. It makes me feel like a bad mother."
Whether they're the best of the best or the best of the worst, TV moms are only second best to our own mothers. Happy late Mother's Day to you and yours, and start your summer break off right by catching up with your favorite moms of television!
