Having friends who live in other places can be really cool. I mean, who doesn't want a best friend that lives in an interesting place that you can go to visit? And while it can be exciting at first to have a best friend that lives far away, you will soon learn that it's hard. Really hard. Unlike friends who live close to home, you can't visit often or do things together all the time. I love my friends, but the following are ten things that are rough about long-distance friendships.
1. SO. FAR. AWAY.
The actual miles that separate us infuriate me. I hate that I don't get to see you in person every day, and that if I want to see you, it requires me taking a few days to travel if I want to spend just a day in your presence.
2. Texting only goes so far.
I will admit, I don't know what I'd do without that little piece of technology that allows us to communicate frequently. Half of the time, we text like an old married couple, but it doesn't stop me from wanting to talk to you in person... or hug you... or tackle you.
3. Goodbyes.
Saying goodbye is always the worst.
4. FOMO.
The fear of missing out is real. Every second we spend apart is another second that I'm missing out on something. What if I miss a huge moment? What am I supposed to do?
5. I miss your face.
'nuff said.
6. The goodbyes.
Yes, they're that bad.
7. Waiting to hear from you.
Sometimes it feels like I'm the needy girlfriend keeping tabs on her significant other, so I don't send a text every time I want to because it probably wouldn't be socially acceptable. I just sit and wait.
8. Withdrawal.
When it's been so long that I can't remember when I last saw you.
9. The babbling.
When everyone else is sick of hearing about you, I continue to tell them stories about our adventures. Sorry, but if I can't see you 24/7 I'm gonna talk about you 24/7.
10. Goodbyes.
Did I mention that the goodbyes are the worst?
So yeah, all of these suck. Long distance friendships are hard; they require a lot of work and dedication. However, through all of the tears and struggles, I wouldn't give up being your friend for anything in the world. I will gladly endure the long stretches of time where I don't get to see you for those special moments when I do. It's difficult, but it's definitely worth it.
