Any girl who has a dog is a dog mom. Your family and friends may just think you're crazy, but you're definitely not. You feed them, you love on them, you play with them, you potty train them, you comfort them when they're scared, you teach them how to behave and you most importantly pay for their well being. You are a dog mom, and these are the confessions of a dog mom.
1. Yes, I talk to my dog.
Sophie is my dog, and I talk to her about everything. I mean, it may be just a tad "crazy dog lady," but I talk to her like she's a person. Sometimes she looks at me like she has not a clue what I'm talking about, but she's always there to listen. Of course there's the baby voice that I talk to her and she knows the words "potty" and "bye-bye" just like a toddler does.
2. Yes, my dog is my child.
Sophie's my child. She is two and I tell her happy birthday. I treat her like she's human and love her like she's my biological daughter. I tell people all of the time that she is my furry baby, and though she's two to me she's still my puppy. Just like a normal person looks at their real human child.
3. Yes, my dog is one of my best friends.
Though my dog can't talk back to me, go shopping, or get her nails done with me, she is still one of my best friends. I look forward to coming home and hanging out with her and she's happier to see me than anyone I know. That's a best friend.
4. Yes, my dog pretty much owns my bed.
For eight pounds of nothing my dog sure does take over my bed. She sleeps right up against my stomach and stretches out and doesn't care at all that she kicks me. My bed is most definitely her bed.
5. Yes, I let my dog kiss me.
Most people look at me in disgust when I let my dog lick me right on the face. Like I said though she is my child and parents let their kids kiss them, so I let Sophie kiss me.
6. Yes, I let my dog lick my ice cream.
This I guess is a little embarrassing to admit. Dog moms, we have to own this. We let our fur babies lick our ice cream. We even continue to eat our ice cream after we let them lick it. It's probably gross, but they're our babies so we don't think anything of it.
7. Yes, my dog has more toys than a toddler does.
Spoiled? She most definitely is. She has balls, stuffed animals, light up toys, toys that squeak, the list could go on and on. Whenever I'm out shopping, most likely at Target, I have have to get her a new toy. Mainly because I feel bad for leaving her, but also because I just can't resist.
8. Yes, my dog wears clothes.
She doesn't wear them all of the time, but she does wear them. She has my favorite teams jerseys and bandanas. She has graphic t-shirts, and she even has a pair of Christmas pajamas. She has it all, and she probably doesn't really enjoy wearing them, but of course I make her, at least for the picture!
9. No, that's not a fur sweater. That's just my dog's hair.
Sophie is a yorki-poodle mix so she doesn't shed. I've had my fair share of fur babies that shed though. Hair being on your clothes becomes a norm. Sometimes you look messy and not put together, even though you spent a hour and half getting ready a picking out the perfect outfit. Hair on your leggings is just going to happen, we dog moms must accept it.
10. Yes, I contemplate being a stay-at-home dog mom at least 20 times a day.
It would be the life. Staying home and cuddling with your dog, taking them to the dog park, all the fun weekend activities everyday. It would be great.
Life is hard, but our fur babies make it a little bit better. We love our dogs like they're our children, some may think it's odd, but we completely understand each other. So, dog moms, hug your fur baby extra tight, and don't listen to those who think we're crazy!
