I'm not afraid to admit it.
Sometimes when I'm bored and binge watching Netflix or Hulu, I'll view the occasional chick flick (after watching at least six hours of football, of course). After years of gathering a solid collection of my favorites, here's a list of chick flicks all men should not be ashamed to go out and watch (maybe just grab a couple beers and a dozen hot wings to balance it out):
1. The Devil Wears Prada
Since I'm writing this article, I guess I might as well just admit to you right now that I am a HUGE Meryl Streep fan. As such, this movie is my personal Streep favorite (well maybe outside of "Kramer vs. Kramer." Or "The Iron Lady") because it has so many different elements. Solid comedy throughout, sometimes drama, and other times, a classic romcom feel. But if you can sit through the focus on fashion, underneath is a cinematic classic that is one of the most underrated films of the 21st century. Oh, and Adrian Grenier from "Entourage" is in it.
2. Pretty Woman
If you watch no other film on this list, at least watch "Pretty Woman." The quintessential chick flick for anyone under the age of 40, this movie has its place in history as one of the most successful romcoms (romcom stands for romantic comedy, if you didn't catch on) of all time. If you can ignore the outrageous plot (A rich business man lost in L.A. stops to ask a prostitute, played by Julia Roberts, for directions) and pretend that skid row prostitutes are as clean and educated as Roberts, this movie actually has a pretty great story. Also... how do I put this tastefully... Julia Roberts is extremely attractive in this film, and watching this for the first time was probably when I realized that girls don't have cooties.
3. Grease
A timeless classic, "Grease" is one of the less female-exclusive films on this list. All the fun and kitsch of 1950s Americana is in here, as well as John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John in their prime. The story of a summer fling that goes awry when the goody-two-shoes girl shows up and threatens to ruin the bad boy's image, this is one of the most original and fun musicals on the big screen. As I mentioned before, this one isn't totally directed towards females, as a large part of the movie focuses on cars, sex, and being rebellious.
4. Mean Girls
I don't care what anyone says, this movie is flat out hysterical. One of the more raunchy and comedic chick flicks of all time, there is not a minute in this movie where you won't be laughing. Add to that an all star cast of talented and attractive actresses (Amanda Seyfried, Tina Fey, Rachel McAdams, Lindsey Lohan, Amy Poehler, just to name a few) where every character has funny quirks and classic one-liners that have become part of the Millennial Lexicon ("Four for you, Glenn Coco! You go, Glenn Coco!"). This movie never feels like a chick flick, it always feels more like a raunchy comedy that you would watch with your buds, just with women stealing the spotlight in the main roles.
5. Annie Hall
If you've never seen a Woody Allen movie, please stop reading this right now and immediately watch/screen at least a dozen of his films. One of the finest film makers of all time, Allen reached his peak when he directed and starred in "Annie Hall." Even though this movie was made in the late 1970s, when cinema and popular culture were undergoing a lot of changes, "Annie Hall" never feels stale and always provides the classic Woody Allen neurotic monologue while also portraying real heart and emotion. This one is unlike many other romcom chick flicks and displays many elements that changed how directors crafted their films, which in part helped the film win Academy Awards for Screenplay, Direction, and Actress in a Lead Role.
6. Breakfast at Tiffany's
The timeless beauty Audrey Hepburn stars in this career-defining role based on the Truman Capote novel. Another all-time great on this light, the film documents the life of Holly Golightly (interesting name, eh?), a Manhattan socialite whose plan is to marry basically any man with significant wealth. Of course, she finds real love and struggles with choosing happiness or wealth, that old story line. This movie utilizes that story exceedingly well, however, and Hepburn gives the performance of a lifetime. Worth a watch at least once in your life. Also, that song "Moon River" is from this movie, and it's probably the most famous song from Hollywood not titled "Over the Rainbow."
7. Sixteen Candles
The great Roger Hughes was arguably one of the best film makers of the 1980s and his professional relationship with Molly Ringwald (who we would team up with in "The Breakfast Club" and "Pretty in Pink") began in this coming-of-age classic. It's a traditional John Hughes movie (boy/girl is immature, boy/girl goes through some event that forces them to grow up quickly and realize the important things in life, boy/girl is all the better because of it), so its plot isn't anything groundbreaking. But it is a solid movie and helped launch the careers of Molly Ringwald (who would become a mainstay in 1980s and 90s cinema), Anthony Michael Hall (a bit of a nerd in his early film appearances, but best remembered as the arrogant jock boyfriend in "Edward Scissorhands"), and John Hughes (who would go on to direct the aforementioned films as well as classics like "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" and "Home Alone").
8. Legally Blonde
This comedy starring Reese Witherspoon tends to turn off many male viewers by its blatant "Look, a girly movie" promotion, which is a great disservice to everyone involved in its making. "Legally Blonde" is about a sorority girl who gets her heart broken and decides to go to Harvard to win her man back, only for him to spurn her advances, at which point she focuses on being a successful lawyer. Yes, the plot is completely unbelievable (Witherspoon's character achieved a 4.0 GPA in college by majoring in fashion and submits her Harvard application on scented pink paper,) but the straightforward roasting of so many different stereotypes (the rich daddy's girl sorority girl, the career-oriented try hard, etc) coupled with some funny acting, in particular the hilarious yet underrated Jennifer Coolidge, makes for a comedic chick flick that doesn't often feel like it.
9. Mamma Mia!
This one is flat out a chick flick. The movie is based off the stage play of the same name, which is based on the music of the Swedish pop band ABBA. If you're brave enough to face this one, the very talented ensemble cast (Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Julie Walters, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Christne Brasinski, just to crack the surface) does a great job of bringing the stage play to life. The plot is simple enough: a young woman (Seyfried) is getting married at the resort hotel her mother (Streep) runs on an island in Greece. In preparation for the ceremony, she invites three men that her mother had relations with at the time of her conception in order to figure out who her real father is. The songs of ABBA are incorporated flawlessly and the movie actually is very interesting. I highly recommend you put on a brave face and just watch this one.
10. Silver Linings Playbook
One of the best dramas of all time, this movie stars Bradley Cooper (reason enough to watch this) and Jennifer Lawrence as two mentally ill strangers who come together and become a strange duo. This movie has probably the most original plot on this entire list and is worth watching from start to finish. Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, and Robert De Niro all act to perfection and there is a large emphasis on the Philadelphia Eagles (football, yeah!). If you haven't seen this one, go out and watch it. Now.
Honorable Mentions:
Clueless: A classic 90s movie to the core. One of the very early examples of comedy based on making fun of the technology age, the out-of-date lingo and old style gadgets reveal the movie's age, but the comedy holds true to this day. Add to that a great cast (especially the late, great Brittany Murphy) and this is one of the best movies ever made starring almost exclusively young women in lead roles.
Bridesmaids:
Hardly a chick flick, this all-female gross-out comedy is an instant classic that you need to see. Its exclusion from this list is based on the fact that I wouldn't really categorize it as a chick flick. Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig tear the house down in one of the funniest movies of all time.
"Chick flicks" shouldn't mean that these movies are reserved for only female enjoyment. Many times, we see the promotion of these movies or here them being described as "chick flicks" or "romcoms," and we, as guys, are turned off. But if you just give these movies a chance, some of them are cinematic classics, some powerful dramas, and others, hysterical comedies. I highly recommend you watch one or more of these movies because, honestly, they're better than the "bro movies" available on Netflix and 1000 times better than any Pauly Shore or Dane Cook movie.
