If you have ever seen "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," you know why it’s such a classic. As three adolescents struggle with the pains of schooling and finding themselves, they all decide to take a day off to explore the town and make the most of their time together. As we transition into the season of sunshine and school break, here are ten pieces of summer advice of which Ferris Bueller would most definitely approve.
1. Hit the pool with some friends.
It’s summertime, and we all know what that means. It’s time to find a body of water, grab some friends and spend the day together! Whether you prefer to soak up some sun like Sloane, enjoy a refreshing drink like Ferris, or go for a more serious dip like Cameron, the pool is a great place to spend your days. Enjoy the summer sun in all its glory.
2. Do something absolutely crazy.
There’s something about the summer air that brings out spontaneity in all of us. Without the bitter bite of the cold and rigid class schedule, we are free to spend our afternoons how we like. So why not do something memorable? Now is your chance to join the parade and step outside of your comfort zone. Go big or go home, right?
3. Dance!
A summer without dancing is a summer wasted. Whether you are a skilled ballerina or a regular at the local club, dancing is a great way to stay active and express yourself! And with the temperatures rising, breaking a sweat is already expected. You might as well enjoy it! So blast the tunes, find your favorite dancing spot and go shake your groove thing.
4. Look at things from a new perspective.
Now that you don’t have to spend every moment studying or staying busy on campus, it’s time to gain some perspective on things you may have missed. Catch up on the local events, visit a new place, or attempt to step into another person’s shoes. The new insight you may gain will give you food for thought without sitting in a classroom. You may also walk away with some amazing memories.
5. Fall in love.
Summer romance is always a beautiful way to spend the season, and it is also a great time to rekindle the spark if you are already in a relationship. It’s a great season to set aside time for picnics, road trips, or lazy afternoons with your partner. If you enjoy being single, don’t be afraid to fall in love with something else you enjoy, such as a sport, skill or hobby! Regardless, in the spirit of Bueller’s charming ways, be sure to sport a pair of shades with a wink for the best effect.
6. Go to a museum.
School may not be in session, but there is so much you can learn from local museums. Whether you visit a historical center, arts museum, or fashion exhibit, there is much to be gained. Most tickets are under $15 for students, and entry into a museum will usually guarantee you a full day of exposure to new ideas, interesting work and mesmerizing stories. You can grab some friends and make it a group trip, or if you’d like, you can escape the world and give yourself a tour. Since summer is often a season of solitude, fun and reflection, a trip to the museum is most befitting.
7. Face your fears and take a stand.
One of the most magical parts of summer is toward the beginning, when the frustrations and exhaustion of school catapult us into the freedom and possibilities that lie before us. For a brief moment, we are impervious to pain and completely unstoppable. So why do we hesitate? Unfortunately, without persistence, summer can become one continuous, easy break. The goals we set in May deteriorate, and we alter them to revolve around our Netflix habits. Although a break is always nice to rest, it is important to also push ourselves and dig deep to discover what we truly want. Whether it is time to make personal changes or confront those around us, it is important to face our fears and keep building the future we want.
8. Have quality conversations.
All too often, it is easy to lose touch with college friends over the summer. Furthermore, it is widely accepted that unless you are very close friends, a text here and there is the norm. But we must ask ourselves: Are we having the long summer talks we want to have, or are we opting for a text simply because it is more convenient? Ferris Bueller would be mortified. Now is the time to connect with those around you, before you get caught up in fall deadlines and holidays with your family. So when you talk to friends, try asking yourself: Are your conversations simply maintaining relationships, or are they nurturing them?
9. Find your squad.
Whether you have one best friend, three baes, or a crew of 20, it is essential to have those friends that you can rely on. These are the buddies that will follow you into your ridiculous schemes, buy matching sunglasses with you, and remind you not to take yourself too seriously. Summer will have its ups and downs, but it will be so much better when you have your Sloane and Cameron by your side.
10. Take your time.
Ferris Bueller is basically the king of vacations, and he had it right when he said “Life moves pretty fast.” If you give yourself a week at the beach, a day at the park, or even a five minute break at work, make sure you thoroughly enjoy it. Pause to relish in the joys of the day, and give yourself time to truly experience each moment. You’ll start to notice that things are better than they seem.
So, there you have it: If you want to make the most of your summer, you must channel your inner Bueller. So inhale the sweet smell of freedom, go find your favorite pair of shades, and ask yourself: “What would Ferris Bueller do?”
