We are only five months into 2016, but we have seen a lot. The presidential race growing more intense, terrorist attacks in countries all over the world and the loss of some legends (Bowie, Alan Rickman, Prince). Though we can't predict what else this year has in store, we can appreciate some of the great tunes that have emerged from 2016 thus far. As an avid music lover, I've compiled a list of my ten favorite songs that have been released since the beginning of 2016.
10. Figuring it Out – SWMRS
This song has a 90's garage rock vibe, yet still sounds modern. This song sounds like high school. It sounds like doing stupid things with your friends in the middle of the night. It will take you back to that time in your life where you didn't have all these adult responsibilities and you could just rock out with your friends. The booming chorus ensures that this song is only to be played at a ridiculously loud volume. Also, the drummer of SWMRS is the son of Billie Joe Armstrong, front man of Green Day.
9. Endless Bummer — Weezer
After immense success in the 90's, and a few less popular (but still good) albums throughout the 2000's, I am so happy to say that Weezer is back and better than ever. This song is a perfect closer to Weezer's latest White Album. The beachy acoustic in the beginning and the slow buildup to full-fledged rock n roll is nostalgic and easy to sing-along to. This album should be the anthem of your summer.
8. Cleopatra — The Lumineers
The Lumineers have a way of making folksy music that tells a story and lingers in your soul. "Cleopatra" tells the story of a missed chance at love, as front man Wesley Schultz wistfully sings, "I was late for the love of my life." The song may make you feel sad, or happy, or longing. But the point is, it will make you feel something.
7. 7 — Catfish and the Bottlemen
Feel like you're missing a simple but genius rock song in your life? Coming in at #7 on my list is, well, "7". This song is alternative rock at is finest. Its lyrics are heartfelt, vocals are powerful, and instrumentals are head-banging. This song sounds like the lovechild of The Strokes and Oasis — which makes for some pretty great music.
6. The Sound — The 1975
It was hard to choose just one song from this album because the entire album is a masterpiece. But this song is so catchy it should be illegal. And the lyrics are mesmerizing: "I know when you're around 'cause I know the sound of your heart." Not to mention there's a guitar solo towards the end that's perfect for intense air guitar playing.
5. All My Friends — The Summer Set
This is an unabashedly cheesy pop song about one-night stands and bad decisions. It's been stuck in my head for approximately three weeks and I'm not even complaining because it's that catchy. "All My Friends" is a feel good party song that will have you jamming til the sun comes up and you're trying to remember what you did last night.
4. 2AM — Bear Hands
This is my favorite album right now. I can guarantee you've never heard music like Bear Hands before. "2AM" is the kind of song you listen to with the windows down on a late night drive when the highway is empty. And the lyrics have never been truer: "Nothing good happens past 2 a.m." Please go listen to this album in its entirety — you will not be disappointed.
3. U-turn — Tegan and Sara
Tegan and Sara are back with their new album "Love You to Death" scheduled to release in June. This is a song about recognizing one's faults and asking for forgiveness. But it is an excellent pop song that will make you want to dance. Tegan and Sara have always been great at juxtaposing serious lyrics with upbeat tunes and "U-turn" is no exception. The 80's synth-pop vibe will truly make you love this song to death.
2. Red House — John the Ghost
John O' Callaghan, lead singer of The Maine, has launched a solo project called John the Ghost and there are no words to describe it other than haunting. O' Callaghan is poetic and emotional and just so real. All the things you've ever wanted to say, he can put it in words. And make it sound beautiful. "Red House" will leave you feeling like your heart just got ripped out of your chest. In a good way, of course.
1. Don't Hurt Yourself — Beyonce
