For the past two years, I have spent spring break with my grandparents in their retirement community in Fort Myers, Fla. Most teenagers think I'm crazy for wanting to spend a week with my grandparents when I could, just as easily, spend a week in a cheap hotel on the beach with my friends. I disagree. There are so many benefits to spending the week with your grandparents rather than on a beach with thousands of your closest friends.
1. You get a full night's sleep.
Things around the house start to slow down by around 10 p.m., allowing you to get a full eight hours of sleep and still be able to wake up in time to enjoy your coffee while watching the sunrise.
2. The food is better.
Forget complimentary hotel breakfasts and fast food. Eating meals with your grandparents means healthy home-cooked meals, cabinets and a fridge full of snacks and nice meals out.
3. The multitude of exercise opportunities available.
Water aerobics available Monday and Wednesday mornings and, of course, power walking down the road to fetch the morning paper.
4. No crowds.
Not being surrounded by people 24/7 over spring break leaves more time to spend with yourself. 'Cause who doesn't love some quality alone time?
5. You get to stay caught up on the news, "Wheel of Fortune" and "American Idol."
You're settled in for the night by 8p.m. at the latest, leaving plenty of time to watch "Wheel of Fortune," "American Idol" and the nightly news.
6. You can leave the makeup at home.
Your grandparents think you look beautiful no matter what and probably think you look better all-natural anyways!
7. The music is better.
All those "oldies but goodies" songs that you secretly love but are embarrassed to listen to in front of your friends are all your grandparents listen to.
8. There is an equal exchange of knowledge.
You can learn a lot from your grandparents, but they also appreciate what you have to teach them.
9. You save money.
Being a broke college student, it's nice to know that your grandparents have your expenses covered once you get there.
10. Quality time with your grandparents is priceless.
Though we all appreciate how much our grandparents spoil us, the quality time you get to spend with them is priceless. I mean, if we're being honest, your grandparents are probably the coolest people you know.
