It’s the beginning of a new year, and with this new year comes a new lineup of movies that need to exceed our expectations like never before. The variety of films being released in 2016 will have something special for every kind of taste. Everyone is excited to see the sequels to their favorite films as well as fresh movies and franchises to love. Here are some of the movies that have the most hype and anticipation surrounding them as we enter 2016.
1. Hail, Caesar – February 5th
With a cast of movie stars and comedians, this movie has some high expectations to meet when it is released. Among the biggest names are George Clooney, Scarlett Johansson, Channing Tatum, Josh Brolin, Jonah Hill, and Rafe Fiennes. The plot is about a well-known leading man, Clooney, being kidnapped from his movie set. The Hollywood studio fixer Eddie Manniz, played by Brolin, must save him among the many other tasks he faces in the movie business, like a pregnant actress.
2. Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice – March 25th
Does a year go by without at least a couple superhero movies coming out? In this one, two of the most well-known superheroes meet, played by Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill. Jesse Eisenberg is in it, playing Lex Luthor, and as always he made me slightly uncomfortable when I watched the trailer. Nonetheless, this movie has two conflicting, powerhouse heroes, the traditionally good and clean-cut Superman alongside the brooding, darker Batman, and that promises to be entertaining.
3. The Jungle Book – April 15th
A remake of the classic from 1967, The Jungle Book will feature voices from actors like Idris Elba, Scarlett Johansson, Christopher Walken, Bill Murray, and Lupita Nyong’o. As far as I can tell, it will be very similar to the original, other than the new voices and updated visuals and technology. I hope they have handled this remake well because that was one of my favorite movies growing up, but it looks like they have and my hopes are high.
4. Independence Day: Resurgence – May 22nd
The original Independence Day movie was a huge hit, so the expectations for the sequel are large. The plot involves all the nations on Earth coming together to defend and protect the planet against aliens. Returning to their roles are Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman, but not Will Smith. This sequel seems to have a very similar plot to the original, but this time Earth is more prepared and even equipped with alien technology they recovered from the first attack.
5. Finding Dory – June 17th
Who hasn’t been waiting anxiously for the sequel to Finding Nemo to be released? As soon as the upbeat, kind-hearted Dory was introduced, you couldn’t help but fall in love. This movie may be one of the most anticipated of 2016 due to its lengthy buildup and the high expectations after the perfection of its prequel. In this movie, Dory will embark on a mission to find her lost family, and if I know Pixar, the journey will probably involve a character dying or coming close to it only to wrap up with a happy ending and good vibes for all.
6. The Secret Life of Pets – July 8th
A great movie for your kids, little cousins, or siblings, and let’s be honest you aren’t mad you have to go see this, the Secret Life of Pets shows you what your animals do when they have the house to themselves.
7. Ghostbusters – July 15th
Introducing the all-female Ghostbusters cast: Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones. The original cast left some large comedic shoes to fill, like those of Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd. Who better to take on these roles than these four women? Kristen and Melissa have been pumping out hilarious movies in the past several years. Kate has proven to be consistently funny in her impersonations and characters on Saturday Night Live, demanding a spotlight.
8. Star Trek Beyond – July 22nd
There are so many Star Wars, Star Trek, and Lord of the Rings movies that it can be hard to keep track of which dedicated fan base is about to have their year made by a new release. This new Star Trek movie promises to be exciting with its action-packed trailer and fresh cast of Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto. If I’m being honest, there has been so much hype for this movie I assumed it had already come out.
9. Suicide Squad – August 6th
Surprise! Another superhero movie. This one is supposed to stand out as a darker, more disturbed take on superhero franchises. Jared Leto's version of the Joker is enough to give anyone chills, and that's just from the trailers. The deadliest, most dangerous villains are all forced to work for the heroes to catch other bad guys, much like using Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs to catch another psychopath. If these villains end up the same way Lecter did, the world may have been better off just leaving them in jail.
10. Sully – September 9th
Directed by Clint Eastwood, this movie will be based on the life of Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, the pilot who made an emergency landing in 2009 into the Hudson River and saved every life of the 155 on board. Tom Hanks will play Sully and Aaron Eckhart will play his copilot.
We aren’t even a month into 2016 and there has already been a whole list of movies I want to see. The Revenant and The Hateful Eight are already winning awards for their greatness. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s Sisters was well-received for a comedy, and how can that movie not be hilarious when it stars your favorite female duo? This year seems to be made up mostly of sequels, superheroes, and remaking the classics, but there’s nothing wrong with a little familiarity.
