This maroon-clad town is the perfect place to live if you love your four-legged friends as much as your two-legged ones.
Here's why:
9. Aggieland Humane SocietyAt the Aggieland Humane Society you can volunteer to walk and play with the dogs that need extra love. This furry friend rescue center features a friendly staff and a hi-tech volunteer system that let’s you really get involved. You can attend a short orientation to become a volunteer and make a difference in the lives of dogs, cats, and other furry critters.
There are other shelters all over the Bryan college station area who need your help! The Brian Animal shelter is one of them. Follow Friends of the Bryan Animal Shelter on Facebook to get updates on all the dogs they bring in and see how you can help.
8. Puppy Station - Post Oaks Mall
Finals got you stressed? Bad day? No worries! Go cuddle a pup for only 25 cents. There are always a variety of adorable pups with big eyes, begging to be held. Be careful though, the temptation to hide a puppy in your purse and run out is all too real. Playing with these puppies is great, but if you are actually looking to buy one I recommend checking out your local shelter first. There are always wonderful dogs in need of a good home.
7. Wiener Fest
No - this isn't a place to go eat hot dogs. Weiner Fest is perhaps one of the most creative fundraising events I've ever seen. This event features wiener dog races, wannabe wiener races for the other breeds, food, and a 5K that the humans can participate in too. The money raised benefits the Aggieland Humane Society and will help the homeless animals in our area. This year it’s October 4th, so go to http://aggielandhumane.org/wienerfest/ and register you and your dog!
6. Aggie Guide-Dogs & Service-Dogs
Our city and University's passion for helping others provides us with even more puppy-loving opportunities as an Aggie. According to ags.tamu.edu, Aggie Guide-Dogs & Service-Dogs (AGS) is a student-run organization at Texas A&M University that began in 1997.
"Our purpose is to educate about, fundraise for, and promote the training and use of service dogs and to increase awareness about how these animals help the individuals with disabilities who use them."
This program trains puppies to become service dogs, fundraises for these service dogs, and educates the public about service dogs. These dogs are trained by carefully selected A&M students and then sent to further training in Arizona after they leave A&M. Learn more at http://ags.tamu.edu/node/34
5. Patriot PAWS and Mardi Growl
Patriot PAWS of Aggieland works closely in conjunction with Patriot PAWS nationally to assist in the socialization, training, and overall raising of specialized SERVICE DOGS to aid disabled veterans. This past February, Patriot Paws of Aggieland put on this fun, furry friendly pet adoption event at One Republic Brewery. It was a day of petting dogs for adoption, food trucks, laughing, licks and paws. No better way to spend a Saturday evening. Watch for the next Patriot PAWS event in 2015.
4. The Housing
College Station has extended its housing in the recent years, which includes pet friendly places to live. With bigger apartments and houses, there's plenty of space to raise your own dog. Nothing turns a house into a home quicker than a dog.
3. The Vets
With one of the best vet schools in the nation, it’s not hard to believe that College Station has a wide selection of great vets. The Texas A&M Small Animal Hospital is right on the vet school campus and offers an entire team of clinicians, veterinary students, and support staff who are committed to providing the best medicine available. "Our patients have access to the full spectrum of veterinary care; from annual preventive medicine through our Primary Care Service to comprehensive cancer treatment through our Oncology Service." (https://vethospital.tamu.edu/small-animal-hospital.... When your dog becomes like family, their health is important to you.
2. Good ole friendly Ags
Aggies are like dogs - always happy to see you. They say hi (whether it’s a lick on the face or not), and they love unconditionally. Just try walking your dog down the street on campus without getting stopped by someone who wants to pet your furry friend. Dog parks are as social for the humans as for the dogs here in Aggieland.
1. Reveille
Yes, the legend herself. Our mascot is as sweet as she is beautiful, and as poised as she is loved. Seeing Rev around campus and on game day is sure to bring a smile to your face.
