Last May after the incident at the Cincinnati Zoo a lot of people have start to speak out against zoos across the nation. This isn’t a new issue going on in the nation but with the death of Harambe it sparked to more people. What most people are overlooking is the benefits that these animals are getting by being in captivity. It is a lot easier to listen to all of the people say that they are wild creatures and deserve to be free, which in a utopian society this would be the best option. However, in the world we live in right now this is the only chance some of these animals get.
We are currently in one of the worst global extinction crisis in the history of our planet. About twenty-one percent of all known mammals are at least threatened with extinction and with many of them right on the verge of being wiped out. Mammals are one of the most important Classes of animal. Many of these organisms are keystone species in their ecosystem. This means that they play an important role in keeping populations of other species in check. Such as if they are the top predator they keep other species from becoming overpopulated and killing all of the creatures they feed on. If they are in the middle of the food chain, they typically are the main food supply for the top predator and if they die out so will the animal feeding on them. The reason I bring this class up is because these are the most popular animals to people such as dogs, cats, horses, and many other pets.
Another grouping of animals that is in a lot of trouble is the invertebrates. This group of organisms is the creepy crawlers such as beetles, spiders, centipedes, and many more. It’s believed that we haven’t even discovered thousands of these creatures but it is also believed we are losing some each day before we can discover them. Also these creatures are arguably the most important for life on the plant. These guys feed many animals and also help get rid of the anything rotten, due to dying vegetation or discarded carcasses.
Now the reasons these zoos are benefitting these creatures.
- Many of the zoos in the nation have some form of breeding project.
- These animals are getting the ideal nutrients in their diets.
- They are typically at less risk of disease that occur in the wild.
- They are placed in mini natural habitats to promote health and happiness.
- They may be part of a research study to promote animal wellbeing.
- Zoos typically have educational programs to teach the public important details of each animal.
- Zoos can take in animals that are hurt in the wild and can’t nursed back to health and released.
These are seven of the many reasons that zoos benefit animals. One of the most important is the research part, which some people say is the worst part. This is a small bit of discomfort for the betterment of their species. This is the best way to understand how these creatures are affected by different elements in everyday life. It also gives them a way to figure out genetic diseases that can happen in populations of these animals. Ultimately, zoos are very beneficial and have saved many species in their existence.
