I think it's safe to say a majority of America let out big sigh of relief last Friday, June 26 when the Supreme Court ruled same-sex marriage legal within all 50 states! Not only did I get the chance to be apart of the newly founded A-Z Campaign's photo-shoot, I had the honor and privilege in getting to sit down and talk to Cristian Abbrancati, founder of the campaign himself to see the motive behind all of his hard work and his thoughts on this huge break in American History.
When asking Cristian about how the A-Z Campaign originated, he explained "It started as a school project for my Intro to Women and Gender studies class. Four of my friends and I brainstormed for days until we finally came up with a common ground, androgyny."
Androgyny is taking characteristics from both the male gender and the female gender and mashing them together. "So the focus on the campaign is that no matter your gender, sex, color, identity, you are still a human; we all range from A-Z and in that spectrum every human has a spot. We are all included, and we should all respect each other as people," he described.
Once the concept was confirmed, Cristian took it upon himself to launch Instagram and Twitter accounts for the A-Z campaign. He began taking photos of people with A-Z marked on their bodies, showing their faces minimally. This symbolizes the whole meaning of A-Z: accept people as the human they were born to be. The Instagram and Twitter accounts have been live for almost two months and are making great progress! "I have been getting great responses and hope to see it flourish some more."
Since Cristian's campaign focuses on gender equality, it only seemed fit to ask about his thoughts and views on the Supreme Court decision. "Most people in this country, including me, are very happy about the outcome of the Supreme Court case. But what I tell many people, that ask my opinion about this topic, is that we must realize that marriage is just one step, a very small step toward total equality. There are many places in this world where same sex marriage isn’t legal yet. In our country we still deal with people getting fired for being LGBT, many hate crimes, and we're on the frontier of transgender equality. I say let's have a quick pat on the back, and let's keep fighting. We still have a very long way to go!"
Well, there you have it! I don't believe I could have said it any better myself. To check out more photos and help support the A-Z campaign, follow @A_TWOZ on Instagram and Twitter! In the words of the Cristian himself, let's keep fighting! We still have a long way to go.
