YouTube’s Ad-Friendly Policy: What We Should Know
Telegraph.co.uk

For over a decade, the world has seen YouTube as one of the top media consumption platforms in existence. With hundreds of YouTubers now able to support a stable livelihood off of the monetization of their videos, the new Youtube update to the terms of service raises concerns.

As it turns out, YouTube has been demonetizing videos that it deems “not advertiser-friendly” for a while now. However, creators haven’t been aware of this and have been losing out on a lot of money.

As YouTuber Philip Defranco reported in his daily show on August 31, YouTubers have only become aware of this due to the new YouTube update. While he discusses how YouTube is far within their rights to make these changes to the terms of service since it’s a business and private website, the ethics are another discussion entirely.

DeFranco, who has been on the website for over 10 years, has seen YouTube grow and change since the very beginning. Now, he is concerned about this new change and what it means for “the little guy." Defranco, who owns clothing and merchandise company For Human Peoples, doesn’t solely rely on YouTube for his income but is concerned about those who might just be starting on YouTube and can no longer say whatever they want because their content may not be monetizable.

YouTube is a place for anyone to create a space to share their ideas and discuss the world around them. From channels that talk about gaming, cooking, unboxing, makeup and so much more, viewers can find almost anything on YouTube. However, it’s a concern to the public that now the pool of ideas might become tainted. “The little guy” might not want to say everything on their mind because they are more concerned with being able to generate revenue from advertising on their video.

Other YouTubers, such as makeup guru Jeffree Star, have commented saying that their videos have been flagged or listed as age-restricted due to the content in the videos, whereas this might not have been the case before the update.

Besides the fear of censorship in the content that viewers can possibly expect on YouTube, there is also the conversation behind the fact that apparently, YouTube has been demonetizing videos for a while, and only now will YouTube email a creator saying that their video cannot be monetized. This has caused creators to lose lots of money over the years, potentially without their knowledge. Again, this affects those who potentially depend on YouTube and the monetization of their videos for their livelihood.

As of now, the new YouTube update allows creators to appeal if they believe that their videos are in fact “ad-friendly," monetizable and within the terms of service.

YouTube is one of the most popular ways to reach the masses, and so what YouTube decides to do next will definitely have an impact on how viewers consume media. YouTube is more than just a business—it’s a platform for discussion and a pool of ideas. Hopefully, it’s also a place that experiences positive growth in the immediate future.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
