12 Youtube Channels For Music Discovery

We admire the individuals who compose and perform music. We admire the way their fingers sweep on fretboards, their delicate gestures, and the way they close their eyes when they exhale the last of their oxygen from the depths of their lungs. Along with all the beauty we see, we are overwhelmed and enthralled with the sound itself. This is why we enjoy going to concerts. We are visual individuals.

Unfortunately, we do not all have the luxury of seeing a live show a few times a week, so we turn to YouTube for rescue. YouTube is a global platform for all kinds of professional and home videos. YouTube has gained a lot of fame for being the home of live music videos and music discovery. So where exactly can we find this music? As an avid music video YouTube viewer, I have built a repertoire for finding new music. In no particular rank, here are a few channels with genre variety where you can start!

1. KEXP

KEXP is a nonprofit online and on-air music radio station in Seattle, Washington. The YouTube channel itself has reached over 900,000 subscribers, providing its viewers a variety of artists and bands from all kinds of genres such as Alabama Shakes, FKA Twigs, Father John Misty, Grimes, and more!

2. NPR MUSIC TINY DESK CONCERT

A Tiny Desk concert is exactly what it sounds like. Artists are recorded live at the desk of All Songs Considered, a music branch of NPR. You can expect a diverse selection of music, as NPR tiny desk holds no preferences for certain genres, just good music! Whether you're into playful folky tunes like Andrew Bird, or an intimate and raw performance by T-Pain, NPR tiny desk is the channel to indulge in live music goodness!

3. AUDIOTREE

Audiotree strongly advocates for raw live performances with no post production. The creators claim to be merely videographers. And so, talent indeed comes naturally.

4. SOFAR SOUNDS

If you want to go more in depth into new music discovery, consider SOFAR Sounds. This music community hosts intimate and secret performances from all over the world. These videos transcend the essence of intimacy from the secret room right to you from your computer screen.

5. OUT OF TOWN FILMS

Out of Town Films is a channel created by a group of friends based in Philadelphia.

6. LA BLOGOTHEQUE

Want to be taken abroad for three to four minutes of your life time? Paris, Manhattan, San Francisco? These sessions provide live intimate performances of artists performing and roaming the streets of various locations in the world. It is no wonder they call these sessions “A Take Away Show.”

7. THE WILD HONEY PIE

The Wild Honey Pie almost always takes a creative spin to the live performances they feature. Catch your favorite artists being goofy and having fun while playing their tunes.

8. MAHOGANY SESSIONS

This channel heavily focuses on singer songwriter folk and blues music though does not limit music to just that. The majority of these performances bring unplugged, sweet, sweet acoustic music to your ears!

9. KCRW

KCRW is a public radio station located in Los Angeles, California. Their channel provides featured artists’ in-studio performances.

10. WORLD CAFE

Branching from NPR is World Cafe sessions. This two hour public radio show features a variety of genres such as rock, indie rock, folk, and alternative country. Find live performances here by Margaret Glaspy, Mitski, and Violent Femmes among many more!

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.

Moms are super heroes dressed in yesterday's clothing and they deserve an award for that.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.
