Not only is voting your right, but it most definitely matters. Since elementary school, you’ve been taught that voting is an important right to exercise. Although it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, the presidential election is an important part in history. On that second Tuesday of November, we all have the opportunity to cast our vote for who we want to guide our country for the next four years.
If you’re not exactly sure how the whole voting process works, here’s a basic run down. “We the people” only have partial say in the outcome of who becomes the leader of our country. Sure, a single vote may not change the direction of an election, but that doesn’t mean it’s not important. When November roles around, each voter will be a part of the electoral college – and it will be your final vote cast in the election. Each state has the same number of electors as its U.S. senators, plus the number of its representatives. We vote for these electors because they have to make such a major decision. These electors typically vote based on the candidate that won the popular vote in their state, but there is no official rule stating they have to vote this way. That is why a candidate can win an election even if they didn’t win the popular vote. These electors are your final decision makers and place their votes in December.
Voting matters. It may seem insubstantial in the short-term, but that is far from the truth. The ability to vote is one many have dedicated their lives for, fought for, and even died for in order to ensure. Currently, less than half of millennials that are eligible to vote actually cast their ballot, and that's a problem. Millennials have tremendous power - whether it be through our consumer habits, social behaviors, or political involvement. We are passionate, well-spoken, and have opinions on pretty much anything. So why neglect politics?
As you consider your vote in this election, ask yourself if you matter. And if you still choose to "sit this one out," check out that bench you're keeping warm. If you truly believe in the causes you support, look for ways to better these social and political problems.Your voice may be small, but it is still important. Use your voice this election year, and stand up for what you believe.
