When going to a large university I was petrified of the new experiences and new people. One person from home changed me for the better though, and that would be my mom. I feel like many girls in college become closer to their moms in college for the following reasons.
1) She is a phone call away, and you will utilize that, a lot. You will call her up to 10 times in one day and she will begin to realize that the amount of times her phone rings will indicate how badly your day is going. She will listen to you rant about friends, boys, professors and having nothing to say but that she is always on your side and she always has your back.
2) She understands that the greatest gift at college is food. Like real food, not dining hall food or bread sticks at 2 a.m. She will drive hours to visit and take you out for lunch at your favorite restaurant. She will send care packages with your favorite candy just as a treat for getting through another day. Food always wins, and food from mom can turn a bad day into a great one.
3) She knows what it is like to be a 19, 20, 21, 22-year-old girl. She gets it, the boys are mean and the girls are even meaner. That you want to go out and party with your friends but sometimes you just want to binge watch your favorite show. She understands all this, and she has more than a lifetime of advice that even if you don’t follow (and she knows you probably won't) you take comfort in the fact that she has made the same mistakes you have.
4) She might be the only person who will never judge you for who you have been, who you are, or who you aspire to be. She loves you for you and will support you no matter the decisions you make. Most people in life come and go and say they will have your back, but no one truly does like mom.
5) She ALWAYS responds to texts. Even if it’s a level 10 emergency and you are about to pass out from the stress she can always make it better with a 2 second text of encouragement. Because of this, you get angry when she doesn’t reply but she does as soon as she sees it and then all is well with the world.
6) She works hard. She is the hardest worker you know and she is working to give you opportunities in life that she never had. Now that you are older you see the blood, sweat, and tears it took to raise you and cannot believe such an amazing woman who did all that could be your mom.
7) You realize that you aspire to be more like her every day. She is your ultimate role model. She is a strong, beautiful, independent woman who does not even understand her worth to you. To be a mother like her eventually would be a great accomplishment and you aspire to have a heart as large as her’s one day.
