I'm FloGrown as people call it. I've lived in Florida my whole life, known nothing else but the two seasons, hot and hotter, and the orange fruit license plates. Every single time I travel out of state or out of the country, I always get the jealous stares when I tell them I reside in Orlando, Florida. Yeah, it's a pretty cool thing to say when the people next to you came from Kansas (No harsh feelings, Kansas.)
There's an incessant amount of things to do in the Sunshine State. Whether you've lived here your whole life and are leaving soon for college (That's me!) or you're visiting Florida in the summer (I'm so so so sorry for this heat.), you'll find that it won't be hard to keep busy.
1. Rainbow Springs (Dunnellon)
This destination is ideal for a day where cooling down is a must in this high ninety degree weather. Although Florida is known for its man made attractions, Rainbow Springs is magical with its waterfall and kayaking opportunities. The nature's swimming pool seems almost artificial with its vibrant color which also makes photographing it so aesthetically pleasing.
2. Wynwood Walls (Miami)
What's so unique about Miami is the spicy culture that permeates the 305 area. There's so much diversity whether it's the rich Cuban food, the South Beach lifestyle or in this case, the talent that lies in Wynwood. Tony Goldman saw the potential in Wynwood's large warehouse buildings with no windows or artistic interruptions as an opportunity to create an art statement. Elaborate graffiti murals and hip, trendy galleries create a neighborhood of creative youth culture that is a must in Florida.
3. Yellow Dog Eats (Gotha)
Because I'm from Windermere, I'm very biased to this restaurant. It's a two story house in a residential area of Orlando with such an attractive, quirky charm to it. It truly is a one of a kind restaurant known for their smoked BBQ. You order at the counter, then choose to sit downstairs by the bar, climb the stairs to a living room area with various kitchen-like tables, outside in a garden seating with inconsistent decorations or you can even slide in a 70's Volkswagen van to munch. There's various options for any kind of diet or concern. The atmosphere has a "hipster" feel to it and a menu that the locals love.
4. Devil's Den (Williston)
Yes... Another spring made it on the list. This one isn't for beginners though. Devil's Den is a swimmer's dream. You must be Open Water certified, but this natural wonder is a destination that would be wicked cool for a spontaneous GoPro adventure if you're up for the 72 degree swim. The crystal clear waters and the eerie feel in the early mornings makes it seem like it came straight out of an exotic vacation.
5. Ravine Gardens (Palatka)
Adding to Florida's magical nature is Ravine Gardens. If you're in the mood for an active day, walking through Ravine Garden's 1.8 mile enchanting trail makes it a great spot for a bike ride or a relaxing stroll. With 59 acres of land, there is plenty of natural beauty to see as you're getting your steps in for the day.6. Anna Maria Island
Of course Florida is known for its beaches, but this certain beach is the most picturesque getaway. It's a small island with few restaurants and many locals which gives it a very tranquil feel to your vacation here. The sunsets are surreal, the restaurants are delicious and the water is a beautiful shade of blue that makes you want to stay afloat and not worry about a single thing.7. Disney Springs (Orlando)
Disney's latest oeuvre (because honestly, it's a work of art) has given people no reason to branch outside of the mouse ears. Disney Springs has transformed Downtown Disney to an area of new shopping appeal, tasteful restaurants and a place to do what Disney likes for you to do best, spend your money here.
8. Blowing Rocks Preserve (Hobe Sound)
A local Florida treasure is this natural rock formation destination. Because of it's unpopularity, the preserve is a quiet place to free your mind and snap some pictures (especially with the sunset's cotton candy skies.) The view leaves you speechless and reminds you of the unappreciated destinations Florida has to offer.9. Murder Mystery Dinner Train (Ft. Myers)
What's better than dinner and a show? This restaurant is on wheels and serves as a form of entertainment as well. It's about a four hour ride on the train with a five course meal that leaves you filled up and ready to solve a mystery. For something different than a dinner booth, this is a must.10. Cassadaga (Volusia County)
How can you resist a trip to the "Psychic Capital of the World?" This little community's eerie psychics, mediums and healers bring a spook that pervades Cassadaga. If you're feeling superstitious and want Florida's take on New Orleans's voodoo fright, this destination will provide you with enough tarot card readings, handwriting analysis, and psychics for a lifetime.
For every bit of adventure that you may wish for, there is a place on this last that will satisfy those desires. Bring sunscreen, prepare for road trips, create an awesome playlist, bring some friends, and get out this summer. There's more than enough places in Florida that will be better than deciding if you should really watch another Netflix episode.
