When you hear the word “soulmate,” the first thing that comes to a lot of people’s mind is the image of their significant other or an image of someone they want to spend the rest of their life with. Although I think that is lovely, I have a different view when it comes to that word.
Carrie Bradshaw said it best when she said “Maybe our girlfriends are our soulmates and guys are just people to have fun with.” Well, Carrie, I think you are right. I have been lucky enough to have the most amazing group of girlfriends in my life. They are truly some of my favorite people that are on this Earth. And if you think about it, I bet most of your girlfriends make some damn good soulmates too.
I mean if you think about it, what do you look for in a soulmate? Probably someone with similar interests, definitely someone to share experiences with, and someone to be there with you through the good times and the bad. Well, fortunately, my girlfriends cover all of those categories. A lot of the time, your girlfriends can be some of the most dependable people in your life. They will be there to bring the chocolate and wine when that boy breaks your heart. They are as excited as you for a night out with some laughs and dancing. They are even pretty useful for a good movie night and some cuddling (don’t lie, I know everyone loves cuddles with their best friends).
Most of the time, your girlfriends are the people in this world that understand you most. They pick up on your favorite songs, what kind of coffee you like, and your favorite restaurants. They can tell if you would like the boy that came up to you or if you are just wasting your time. They know your sense of style and your little phrases that you use.
One of the best traits of having your girlfriends as your soulmates, is the honesty and comfort. Girlfriends are not afraid to speak their mind, especially when you’ve reached this level of friendship. They will tell you if that shirt doesn’t look good, if that boy is playing you, and if you have broccoli between your teeth. They’re not afraid to tell you that you are so weird or that you’re being dramatic. But that is the best part of your soulmate, because they accept you for who you are and you want to be. This brings a sense of comfort around them, which can be hard to find for some people. They stick with you when you make mistakes and when you accomplish your goals.
It may sound weird to have a group of girlfriends as your soulmates, but they become better parts of you and help you become a better person. They help lift you up and they keep you grounded. I truly do not know where I would be without my soulmates, and I thank God everyday for them.
Sure, boys are fun and we love them. But I think that girlfriends simply make better soulmates.
