Your Dog Doesn't Miss You

At least, not in the same way you miss them.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: How can this person just assume my beloved puppy doesn’t miss me?

Some of the happiest memories in my recent years include the presence of a furry, drooling goofball of a dog. Almost three years ago, I came home with another blessing to the family in the form of a fat labrador/pit bull mix puppy. His name is Dallas, and he’s the sidekick to all my adventures.

Dallas is living proof, like all dogs to their owners, that animals are expressive beings. Dogs reveal their emotions on the surface through the language of body and sound. The relationship humans have with their canine friends is a treasured bond throughout the history and growth of man.

But do dogs really love us?

This is a question that has sparked interest in owners and scientists alike. We tell our tail-wagging buddies we love them, think they’re cute, funny, and sometimes troublemakers. Do they drool on us in understanding and agreement, or does the world of complex emotions not exist in their realities?

According to a research study published in the journal Animal Cognition, dogs are emotionally synced to our own human expression. When a person displayed the common behaviors of distress and sadness (vocally, such as crying), dogs responded by attempting to comfort them through licks and nuzzles. Does this mean they truly understand and love us? Maybe.

For college, I left my family are over a thousand miles away. My sidekick Dallas, dog in crime, is far away from me. When I come home for holidays, he’s delighted to see me, and won’t leave my side until I say my final goodbye. Does this mean he missed me as dearly as I missed him? Perhaps. It’s hard to believe a dog will spend its days whining on the porch, watching the driveway for months in hopes of their pack member's return. I know my goofball would rather chase deer and sunbathe than worry over me. He most certainly doesn’t reminisce over photographs together and shed a few tears like I do.

There have been cases of dogs waiting in vain for their vacant owners. The forever faithful Hachiko, an Akita known for his lifetime loyalty and patience, waited for his deceased owner at the Shibuya Station in Tokyo year after year. This canine’s "love" for his owner touched the hearts of millions through his story.

How you perceive the concept of "missing" for animals relies on the knowledge and belief you have. On my behalf, I know my dog misses me, but not in the same way I miss him. And that’s OK. Either way, we’ll be hiking Californian mountains together again soon, happy to be reunited. And that’s what really matters.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
