“Do you believe in soul mates?”
A question we’ve all been asked, but never really know the answer to. People like to propose different ideas about soul mates; whether they believe it means marrying the person of their dreams or that it simply only happens in fairytales. Either way, since the day we were born, it has been drilled into our brains that it involves two people and a happily ever after.
But I have a new proposal for you. What if we abandoned this preconceived notion of a man or woman having to be our soul mate and focused on the people that actually make our hearts smile more than anything: our best friends.
When you think about it, your best friends fit the role of being your soul mate pretty perfectly. By definition, a soul mate is, “a person ideally suited to another.” That being said, who suits you better than the people you spend every day with? More than likely your best friends know you better than you even know yourself. They know just what to say when you’re sad, your order at your favorite restaurant, and daily schedule by heart.
They have seen you at your best, and lord knows they have seen you at your worst. They have stopped you from making a fool of yourself on a Saturday night and they have seen you through your greatest accomplishments. They know your every secret and you trust them to never betray you. They know how to bring your laughter to tears and your tears to laughter. Needless to say, you wouldn’t know what to do without them.
Yes you are going to fight and sure they will say things that make the hairs on your neck stand up. Sometimes you can’t even bring yourself to be in the same room as them without going insane. But luckily for you, your best friends aren’t just something you can swap out when you are tired of them. Whether you like it or not, they are here to stay. No, your best friends can’t take the place of the person you are meant to marry, but the connection you share with them is something that can’t be broken or forgotten.
So, my answer is yes, I do believe in soul mates. I’m just lucky enough to have more than one.
