I’ve learned many things during my 21 years of life so far. While the things I’ve been through and the choices I’ve made have helped shaped me into who I am today, there are a lot of things I would’ve liked to have known at the time.
If I had the chance to sit down with my younger self, I’d have a few things to say.
1. Don’t take your parents for granted.
There will come a time in your life when you want nothing to do with your parents. You’re going to be embarrassed by the things they do or say. But I promise you, everything they do is out of love, and someday they’re going to be gone, so cherish every single second you have with them.
Be grateful for all they do for you. Don’t give them a hard time. Tell them you love them, all the time.
2. Laughter is the best medicine.
Over the years, I’ve found that laughter cures almost anything. There isn’t a happier time than sitting around with friends and laughing until your stomach is in absolute pain.
When these moments happen, embrace them. Laugh until you are on the floor with tears in your eyes.
3. Get rid of toxic people.
You will meet people along the way who aren’t good for your happiness. Recognize these people. Understand that as much as you want to help them, you can’t.
You’ll find yourself exhausting all your happiness trying to ensure happiness in others. Give people a chance, but if they need more than a second chance, they don’t belong in your life.
4. It’s OK to cry.
You're going to go through some things that not everyone your age does. When tough times come around, know that it's OK to show emotion.
It’s OK to cry and it’s OK to scream in frustration. No one is going to judge you for being human.
Cry out all the sadness so that in time, you will find room for joy.
