After Labor Day weekend, we can say that summer has, theoretically, ended. While we are still melting in the heat that September has in store for us, surprisingly, ice cream isn’t. Rumor has it that scientists in Scotland have discovered an ingredient that can make your ice cream cones last!
This naturally occurring protein, referred to as BsIA, can keep ice cream frozen for a longer period of time, allow for the recipe to use less fat and sugar, and ensure a smoother texture for the dessert. That's right, we are talking about less drippy, potentially healthier, yummier ice cream!
Will we be able to transfer this advancement for one dessert to other foods? What about chocolate, candies, and other items that melt? This is a huge development that may be available to us consumers within the next three to five years! To read up more about this, click here or here.
As the summer comes to a close, most of us are back to school or work. Life's relaxed pace of summer loving, full of beach lounging and time to check in with our families at home, has quickened to one of obligation and responsibility, whether it be for professors or bosses.
For those back in college, syllabus week probably took a toll: it is exciting but nonetheless exhausting to jump back into our busy routines. Summer, for me, was a fabulous break where I cleared my head and relaxed in preparation for another full year of academic and extracurricular involvement.
The four months went by quickly, though, as will this fall, and soon 2015 will roll over into 2016 and we will find it difficult to pump the breaks at all until the next summer.
So, in the spirit of the news of melt-resistant ice cream, let's take this as a sign that we should try not to get caught up in the chaos of returning from summer.
It is important to take time to catch up with friends you’ve missed and really engage in your classes and tasks. Take deep breaths when it gets overwhelming, because it will since we’ve been used to a much calmer schedule since May!
Stay on top of your chores, and don’t let the rug get pulled out from underneath you. It is easy to let things spin out of control after summer, starting with syllabus week and suddenly a hundred dates and meetings that need to be planned.
If you take this fall in stride, the transition from season to season will be much easier! And of course, when you’re feeling stressed, ice cream will always be by your side (especially now, since it wont be melting all over you)!
