Ah, middle school was so cool. That's how I felt back then. Now looking back, it really wasn't. Middle school is like a playpen for young teens who desperately try to impress others. When I was in middle school I learned of the online playground that was Myspace.
I remember everyone talking about their Myspace accounts. I wanted to see why everyone was so obsessed with it. I still remember making a cheesy email address just to join. My first day I was obsessed with the site. I was adding all my friends and collaging an obnoxious amount of photos on my profile. I just had to have five emo-esque quotes and pictures of bands.
One of the best things Myspace did was allow us millennials to document our terrible photos on the web. We all thought mirror pics and high angles were everything. We also loved using terrible filters and adding quotes. I had a weird routine where I would upload every picture I took that day to my profile. Everyone had to document their lives in my school. It was like we would never ever be apart.
Some people took Myspace a little too serious sometimes. Anyone remember posting pc4pc? What about displaying your name with your friend count like Silv3rViol3nc3 [15.6k+]?
Myspace was such a crazy, fun part of my early teen years. It kept me connected to so many people in the summer. It was so much fun to mess around and count how many emo people you could find. It was so cool to talk to each other through comments. You knew you were cool when you would caption photos with, "(insert your friend's name here) owns." My all time favorite part was on everyone's top eight. You knew you were friends if you saw each other there.
One cool part about Myspace was that you could follow musicians, bands, actors and celebrities with the site. You could even friend stores and movies. You could make a playlist for your page to help express yourself with your layout. Myspace was such a great place to network and follow pop culture.
Myspace was fun while it lasted for us millennials. In 2008, many of us turned to Facebook. It was the new cool thing. We then forgot about our Myspace accounts. Most people would remember them and reopen them with friends. Typically everyone would laugh at how they used to be.
Myspace has a place in millennial hearts. We were the first young generation to use social media. We got to make online profiles to show people things about ourselves. We now look at it as a joke, but we had fun when it was popular.
Oh, by the way, thank God we don't post things like this on Facebook. Being an angsty teen was weird. We all changed for the better.
