8 Signs You Know You're In PG County...

...DMV does not refer to the Department of Motor Vehicles; it refers to the DC Maryland Virginia region.

Prince George's County is a Maryland county east of Washington, D.C. It is the second most populous county in Maryland behind Montgomery County. Many people who are not familiar with the county assume that the entire county is "ghetto" because there are certain areas that have higher crime rates (like Capitol Heights, Temple Hills, and Seat Pleasant). However, there are some beautiful and peaceful parts of the county like Mitchellville, Bowie, and Upper Marlboro. When one is in the county, whether they live there, are from there, or just visiting, there some things about the county that make it different from other Maryland counties.

Note: some of these are based on what I have observed. Hey, I'm a very observant person :)

You know you're in PG County when...

1. ...the traffic is heavy on I-495 during football season.

FedEx Field, the stadium where the Redskins play, is actually in PG County in the Largo/Landover area. When it's football season, it's almost like every Redskins fan in the DMV is headed to FedEx Field to watch them Skins.

Speaking of traffic....

2. ...it's practically bumper to bumper on MD 214 (Central Ave.) when Six Flags is open, especially during the summer.

Emphasis on the word "especially" I might add.

3....there are several Bojangles' locations.

I have never been there, but I hear that their chicken is really good. I hope to try it out one day :)

4. ...the locals of crime-prone areas use puns to call their area names.

"Shootland" for Suitland, "Oxon Hell" for Oxon Hill, etc.

5. ...there is a Giant Food store in almost every town in the county.

It makes sense because their headquarters are in the county.

6. ...at least one person has their music blasting in the car next to you on the road.

I will admit that I do sit there and dance to the song, especially if it's a song I absolutely love.

7. ...people assume that the whole county is "ghetto."

Yes, it does have areas that are more prone to crime than others, every county, city, state, has areas like that.

8. ...most malls in the county end in "Plaza."

Greenbelt Plaza, Beltway Plaza, PG Plaza, and Capital Plaza, for example.

Welcome to PG County!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
