All School Handshake

The first and last day of school, everyone gathered on the field in a big circle and we somehow manage to shake everyone’s hand. It's either a “Have a good year," “Good-Luck," or “I’m going to miss you so much." There’s always that awkward friend who you're not sure if you hug or not, but you go in for the hug anyway because you have nothing to lose. There's laughter and tears and don’t forget the giant bottle of hand sanitizer at the end. It has to be one of my all time favorite times of the year.

Convocation

The opening headmaster's speech. It always happens to fall on the hottest day when the sun is beating down on you. The one formal you don’t want to forget your sunglasses. Whatever you do make sure you dress in light layers or else you will bake. The boys struggling to breathe in their suit jackets and the girl’s heels sinking into the grass is just a normal part of the day, but during the speech you can look forward to a great BBQ with your advisory.

Mandatory Formal Dinners

More suits, dresses, and heels. A time where you’re supposedly going to become best friends with the new people at your table. In reality, you usually sit in silence because you have to act normal in front of other people besides your friends. There is always those few people that skip out on it and order a pizza. It has to be one of the best nights to post an Instagram.

Dress Code

Don’t we all love it? It's always a great day when you can get away from being in dress code and not get any points. I first came to boarding school with "grandma clothes" It wasn't good but I made sure to fix that. Because of it, the dress code is a normal part of my life. I can’t seem to “break” the dress code and my college doesn’t even have one.

Dorm Olympics

Dorm against Dorm. Dodgeball, Christmas lighting’s, etc. You do everything in your power to make sure your dorm wins.

Mountain Day

The whole school skips for the day to climb a mountain. It’s a struggle but so worth it. Make sure to make if for the photo!

Parents Weekend

The best time to go to the dining hall. Isn’t it funny how nice it gets when your parents show up and how quickly it changes when they leave?

Prep Confessions

If you go to boarding school in New England this is a must follow on twitter. Although the teachers all hate it, it’s a great place to read about all the crazy stuff your school and all your rivals do.

Chapel Meetings

Twice a week everyone gathers into the chapel to talk about the week. It’s a great time to announce your roommate’s birthday. You’ll also probably find out your friend's dog's birthday too.

Study Hall

8:00-10:00 every night, door open, silence. It's dreaded every day, but it inevitably happens. Maybe if you’re lucky you can sneak away to the library for the night instead of your hard, wooden desk.

Lights out

10:30, in your beds! Laying in your bed waiting for your dorm parent to come turn your light off and close your door, as they open your door you quickly hide your phone and pretend you're asleep.

Penguin Attack

Only the best thing to look forward to in the spring. No other words necessary.

Friends from all over

This has to be one of the coolest things about boarding school. And a huge plus is if you want to travel the world, you always have a place to stay.

Graduation

The happiest and saddest day of your high school experience. It's time to say goodbye to your best friends and the worst part is that you might never see some of these people ever again. Though if you're lucky, John Cena could be your commencement speaker.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
