What You Know If You Went To Fat Camp

This is for all the memories and double snacks.

What You Know If You Went To Fat Camp
Zoe Richmond

For six years of my life, I dedicated each summer to fat camp (my Nana calls it fitness camp). I grew up in the 18352, and I owe CPT a lot. We used to say we lived ten months for two. Some of the friends I made at that camp, I still talk to every single day, and it's like we're back in those cabins spending all our time together, not a second has gone by without us being together.

Here are a few things my fellow past fat campers will appreciate. It was much easier for us, and we're the reason why camp is so strict now.

1. Double Snacks

Walk to one side of the field house, stuff a bag of whole wheat goldfish in your shirt, walk over to the other side and get another bag. You did double Zumba today, you deserve a double snack. Now, kids have to line up in their individual divisions to get a snack. No more running off after snack and hiding the second one for later.

2. Snackwells

You're an old timer if you remember when we got these. We had them for snack, and if dessert ran out, we got these babies. It was like Christmas in summer. Now, Snackwells are a thing of the past and something of a myth at camp.

3. Choice

We went to free swim every chance we got, and when that was taken away, we just didn't go. We'd tell one counselor we were going to Zumba, and the other that we were going to the Climbing Center, when really we'd be in the cabin sleeping.

4. Free Swim

Alright, ladies, we all knew the only reason why we went to free swim was for the boys. We got to strut around in bathing suits and hang out with our "boyfriend" of the week. Now, free swim is only available when it is so hot out, even Tony feels bad for us.

5. Splenda

Remember when we got two Splendas a meal? God, THOSE were the days. We'd hide the packets we didn't use under the table, and keep adding to them for a rainy day. Now, you're lucky if you get two a day.

6. SCONES

I shed a few tears over this one. I'd get a blueberry, a friend would get a cinnamon, we'd cut them in half, and have the best of both worlds. Scone mornings were the best mornings, and we could smell them from flagpole. Kids these days now don't know how amazing scone day was.

7. Gum

If you didn't come to camp stocked up with enough gum to last the Zombie Apocalypse, you were a rookie. Hide them in your waistband, folded up clothes, makeup bag, etc. Counselors could have cared less if we had gum, but now, counselors go on the hunt for the kids with gum.

8. Counselor Ring & Center Hill

This is where couples met before they went on a date to the canteen. After the guy bought his girl a flavored water from his canteen booklet, they'd make their way back up from the canteen and proceed to play Truth or Dare with their friends and experience their first kiss. Now, the Counselor Ring has spot lights and too many counselors to count.

9. College Daze

Penn State, Rutgers, Michigan and University of Florida. For three days, we sang, danced, and fought our way to the top. The songs and dances were rehearsed relentlessly, if you were involved in the making of the sign, you didn't leave the art room. Now, College Daze is one day, and not nearly as fun or exciting.

10. COLOR WAR!

1-2-3-4 WE WANT COLOR WAR!

If you didn't have tutus, face paint, socks, shirts, shorts, necklaces, glasses, and more, you were a newbie. We lived for color war. We lived for the big reveal, and for the week of fierce competition. For Friendship Night, and for Song and Alma Night.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
