You Don't Always Have to Have It All Together

Adulting is hard. Like really really hard.

Although we are adults. We have responsibilities, duties to uphold, assignments to complete, parking tickets to pay, credit card bills to keep track of, and a ton of laundry to do. This being said, being perfect at “adulting” doesn’t happen overnight.

At first, you may think “this isn’t all that bad,” or “I got this,” but in reality, the new freedom isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. We’ve all failed and we’re all going to fail again and again but with failure comes success. You don’t always have to have it all together.

Missing appointments because you forgot to put them in your calendar? That’s okay. Reschedule and make a note of it on your fridge or in your phone. It’ll work out. You don’t always have to have it all together.

Forget to submit an assignment on time because it was due on Super Bowl Sunday? The Eagles won, I mean, what do they expect??? Email your teacher because communication is key. 9/10 times they will understand. You don’t always have to have it all together (or in this case, anything together. Because the Eagles won the freaking Super Bowl).

Late on a credit card payment? Figure out the exact amount and schedule the payment for the next possible day you have the money. It’s not the end of the world. Late fees suck, but now you know for next time to budget better. You don’t always have to have it all together.

Two weeks of laundry piled in the corner of your room? No time to get it done? Rather take a nap? That’s okay too. Laundry is the least of our worries really (unless you don’t have any clothes to wear, in that case, public nudity is illegal and you should probably get on it). All in all, if you’re clothed and can go the extra few days without all of your laundry done...do it. You don’t always have to have it all together.

Account overdrawn after a weekend out? Not suggested in the slightest, but it happens. Don’t sweat it. Pick up an extra shift at work so you can pay it back ASAP. Don’t eat out (obviously) and try to utilize what you have until you’re above ground again. You don’t always have to have it all together.

Feeling like your life is going in a never ending loop? Your brain feels like it may explode at any minute and your urge to sleep is much greater than usual? Take care of your body and your brain. Go to the gym to clear your head, take a mental health day, clean your space and take a bath. It’s okay to take a day to yourself as long as you keep track of what you’re missing. You don’t always have to have it all together.

We are adults, but we are also young adults. We aren’t going to always be first in line, the best at everything, or sociable. We’re going to have our good days, and we’re going to have our really bad days. Truth is, that’s life. Not everyday will be perfect, but there are ways to make it better. Try and relax your mind the best you can. Don’t take life too seriously but be conscious of your responsibilities. Be honest, be kind, be happy and remember...

You don’t always have to have it all together.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
