For a countless number of years, music has existed and played a part in the lives of millions of people. In ancient times, it was used for important ceremonies, such as weddings and funerals. Over time, it developed and started to become more diverse. Now, in the year 2016, we have so many types of music. From pop to country, to heavy metal, to electronic, to reggae, we have it all. In today's culture, music has shaped and influenced the lives of countless people. Many of the (in)famous artists that we have today were also influenced by other music artists that came before them. Not only them, but regular people, myself included, have had their lives shaped by the sweet sound of music. I'm here today to tell you about how music has shaped me into the person I am today.
If there is one thing that I cannot live without, it is music. The sweet, sweet sound of music is honestly what keeps me going each and every day. I grew up with two teenage sisters, so the type of music that I was exposed to had a large variety. For instance, I still find myself listening to artists like Mariah Carey (my all time favorite), Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, etc. Their music tastes definitely had an affect on me, and I honestly cannot thank them enough for exposing me to their music.
Even my parents, with their vast love of all things country, had a lasting impact on me. Of course, I don't really like country music much anymore, but that doesn't mean I wasn't impacted. To this day, I still find myself listening to Sara Evans and Crystal Gayle.
Returning back to the topic at hand, music has influenced me in many ways. I remember sitting in my room a few years ago, listening to music, listening closely to the lyrics, and thinking to myself: "Wow, I didn't know people could feel this strongly." See, to my past self, music was nothing more than a form of entertainment. It wasn't until a stormy summer night that I realized that music was more than that.
Music is a form of expression. For people who listen to it, it is a way to get out their emotions. I know from experience that if ever I am frustrated, I am happy, or I am sad, I always listen to music to help me express my feelings. If it wasn't for music, I also don't know if I would still be here today. Music comforts people, it helps them cope, and sometimes it lets them know that everything is going to be okay.
To this day, I always wonder what I would be like if I hadn't discovered certain music artists. What would I be like if I had never heard Amy Winehouse's deep, raw emotional vocals? Or Mariah Carey's amazing vocal ability and talent? Or even Celine Dion's emotional ballads about love? It doesn't stop there, the list goes on. But still, I wonder.
