I know that you were probably shocked by this title. That you, Internet user, are not a politician. If you're reading this article, you're probably just someone who likes to post your political opinion (keyword: opinion) for everyone to see. Call me the bearer of bad news, but I can guarantee you that whatever political opinion you have posted on about Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and/or Snapchat doesn't matter.
Odds are, you didn't go to school to get any kind of education in the field of politics and don't have any other further schooling or education on the matter outside the required courses we all take as students in elementary and high school. In reality, none of us are really actually properly educated to form a real opinion on politics because we don't take the time to truly educate ourselves on the topic. Surely, we think we are and base our political ideologies based on our experiences, but is that really enough to say that you are informed and then to rant about it over and over on social media? Just because our President likes to use Twitter to rant politically, doesn't mean you should.
I am guilty of this just as much as anyone, but it is important to realize how annoying it is when you're that person who posts multiple times a day about politics on social media. Do you really think that the people you have friended on social media really want to read about your political rant? Absolutely not. More importantly, no one wants to read it when you are sharing "facts" from pages that are very clearly biased towards the far right or far left. (Also, keep in mind everything you see is catered to you through "filter bubbles" and therefore you aren't getting any outside perspectives). Those are not impartial, factual stories and research was even done to show how much of those fake news stories were highly influential on our past presidential election.
On top of this, these politically motivated social media posts aren't even really political anymore, but are just bashing people instead. Here's a thought: how about you have some empathy? (And I highly encourage everyone to click the link to look at the definition of empathy and really grasp the meaning of the word.) Just because you don't agree with movements such as the Women's March or Black Lives Matter, maybe instead of the time you're wasting to look for a video to share along with your typically uneducated opinion, you could be reading and educating yourself on these movements. For the women who didn't need the Women's March: that's great! But what about the millions of women across the globe who don't have the luxury of being as privileged as you to even think about their voices being heard? (Might I add they're all using the same freedom of speech that is allowing you to annoy all your social media friends with the never-ending political posts). For everyone against Black Lives Matter because select individuals are violent, imagine if we as Americans said to ignore our protests for our freedom as a country when we were as petty to dump someone else's tea into a harbor? Educate yourselves on what these movements actually mean and not what the media wants you to think it means.
So to all the Facebook politicians out there: instead of clogging all of our feeds with your political bull, take this as a reminder to educate yourself so maybe we can all have calm, educated debates.
