Since we were young we were taught never to judge a book by its cover, but as we grew up something changed within us, and we slowly started placing people into categories. Walking on my college campus I hear all of the negative stereotypes that we seem to be so obsessed with now days, as if a stereotype defines who we truly are as people. Truth is we are all here for a purpose and it’s not to appease everyone around you.
We as people are not perfect in any form, and for us to criticize others for how they look and who they are just ends up hurting yourself and your image as a person. Every day I hear negative comments about how someone isn’t pretty enough to be dating him, or that she’s too fat to be a dancer, he must be gay because he is a theatre major and even he’s to scrawny to be an athlete. Every day our world is filled with these toxins that do nothing but smother everyone and give us a self image that we aren’t worth it. That who we are as a person is not someone to be proud of or happy to be seen as. Every day we are given the image of being WORTHLESS to a guy in your class, a girl in your sorority, a friend from back home, your significant other, or maybe even someone you may not even know. Here is your wake up call.
Yes I am a believer of God. I believe that he has put everyone on this earth for a purpose. I believe in science. I believe that the earth rotates and people are forever stuck on this planet. However I also believe that God doesn’t make mistakes. We did not develop from a test tube, we developed from thin air to show the world that we are fearful and who we are is wonderful, and that we were made for so much more than anyone truly knows. I know there are people out there who will question everything I am saying and that is fine. It is their own journey to figure out who they are and that may be someone who doesn’t believe. That’s perfectly fine because they are still fearfully and wonderfully made!
However isn’t it weird to think about how our whole world even began? Whether you believe in a Higher power or not, take a moment go outside or look out your bedroom window and think about this big blue and green beautiful planet and all of the amazing opportunities it has provided for you. Now I want you to think about all of the toxic things this planet is filled with and things that maybe haven’t gone your way. Now I want you to think of this planet like a painting. Today it painted a beautiful picture with your life being a small part of it. You go through the day making decisions, taking in toxins, living your life the way YOU want to. Then we go to sleep and our painting goes to the museum in our mind which we refer to as memories. The next day the world re writes its self and it continues to do so over and over again.
The meaning of my analogy is to show you that you are given a path to follow and you are in control of staying on that path. There are people along the way who will try to tear you down and tell you’re not good enough. All you have to remember is that you are fearfully and wonderfully made. These people trying to categorize you and make you feel and seem as though you can’t be proud of whom you are, are people that you need to cut out and not associate with. You can’t let anyone tell you how to live your life, or who you are as a person. In those moments when you don’t feel special just remember God looked at the earth and decided that it needed one of you. How special is that? Smile because you are fearful you are perfect and you are HIS!
Go out and stop listening to others stereotypes, and if you are the one stereotyping which honestly everyone does, stop and think to yourself is it true or am I just saying it to hear myself. Everyone on this earth was brought up to be fearless and have the courage to be wonderful. It’s up to us to take what we know and apply it to our lives!
“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Psalm 139:14
