It’s almost the end of the semester. The assignments and exams seem to be piling up at an alarming rate. It feels like the work will never end and that at some point you will drown underneath it, never to come back up again. There’s no way that you'll be able to finish the semester. You just can’t do it.
I am here to tell you…YES YOU CAN!
You can do it because if you couldn’t, you never would have made it to this point. You would have quit already if you really could not do it. But you have not quit yet, you are still here, and the end is a lot closer than you think. So just put your head down and barrel right through the rest of whatever you have to do. Think of all the rest and free time you’ll have afterwards.
Let’s say you’re a brand new runner. You can’t run a full mile without stopping. However, you are determined to run a 5K. You keep trying to run a mile but can’t do it. You consider giving up because it's too hard and you don’t think that you will ever be able to run a full mile, let alone a whole 5K. If you give up, you’ll never reach your goal. If you keep at it, you’ll be able to run a full mile. Then you’ll be able to run more than that. It might take a little while, but you will reach that 5K.
Things don’t magically happen overnight. Some things take time, patience and perseverance. Nothing is impossible unless you make it impossible, though. If you don’t think that you can do it, remember… YES YOU CAN!
Here’s another scenario. You’ve just graduated from college with a degree in journalism and you're applying for jobs. A friend tells you that the news station they work at is hiring a new anchor. You don't want to apply for the position because you think that the station will only want to hire people who have previous experience. Your friend convinces you to apply anyway, and you do and get the job. If you hadn’t applied, you never would have gotten the job, and you never would have known that you were capable of getting the job.
Sometimes doubt can get in the way of your capabilities. It is very easy to back off and assume that you just can’t do things. You have to get past it and tell yourself that you can do it. Yes you can, yes you can, YES YOU CAN! Don’t be your own worst enemy. Think about situations in the long term as opposed to the short. You’ll surprise yourself. My mom couldn’t run a full mile without stopping and then went on to complete three half marathons. I spoke to a journalist who had the same exact scenario I described happen to him. You should never doubt yourself or give up so easily, because YES YOU CAN!
