"Did you follow your boyfriend to college?" a real question that I get asked on the regular. Usually when people ask its always said in a negative way, but why? Because, it doesn't work for most people.
A little bit of back story:
My boyfriend and I met in high school when we were 14 years old. Honestly, I could say the rest is history, because it really was. We started "officially" dating as Juniors and have been together ever since. When we started to near the end of high school he started to look in to colleges he would like to attend and I started to look in to mine. To everyone's surprise, none of the colleges were the same. I was dead set on a school about an hour away from home and he was still up in the air about where he wanted to attend because he wanted to play baseball in college. He finally decided on a college that was about an hour away from where we lived and one day he asked me if I would just apply for "sh**'s and giggles" and I did. When all my financial aid came back from all my schools, it ended up that the college he was planning on to attend, was cheaper for me to go there than the rest of schools I applied to. I went back and forth on what I was to do? What were people going to think? But that all went out the window when I made my decision. We were going to college together. It just felt right.
2 years of college down and it still feels right. There has been so many ups and downs and I couldn't imagine myself going through it with anyone else. At the end of a bad day the only person I want to talk to is right there 100% by my side, we motivate each other, we laugh, we grow together, and we make it work.
I am certainly not saying this is something that everyone should try or do because it's not easy. I am simply just trying to understand the negative thoughts behind boyfriends and girlfriends going to college together. Contrary to belief, I did not lose any of my self dignity or independence; I gained an amazing opportunity to experience the next stage in life with my best friend.
