New York Fashion Week. That simple statement is what makes all fashionistas alike book their hotels for a week and head to the concrete jungle. Luxurious gowns and unique patterns worn by tall models strut down the runway with cameras flashing all over the place.
Kanye West is not a part of this lavish week, at least not on the same level. To put it bluntly, West’s brand reminds me of the clothes I would have to wear to gym class in elementary school. The same t-shirt my mom would buy two sizes too big with a basic hoodie in a color to match. The only interesting part might’ve been the shoes if the kids knew which store to go into. In this case, the shoes are West’s famous leisure sneakers.
The Yeezy brand is a rich investment for torn leisure. With $600, customers can buy a faded sweatshirt and for a couple hundred extra, they can add a few holes in “carefully selected” places.
This is in no way fashion. This is an expensive brand serving customers less design than Target. In fact, Target looks much more luxurious when you compare the two together. They at least shed a sliver of originality to their overplayed trends, and at a drastically cheaper rate.
Customers are buying into the celebrity name. One could argue that they do that for Chanel or Tom Ford too, but they have the right. Top designers such as those have worked hard for different designs with high-end quality. They were rightfully placed at the top, and they didn’t use the dollar sign or the Kardashian name to get there either.
This season’s collection didn’t stray from any of the past ones. The only difference is the change in a neutral black to a neutral tan.
If anything, the only success in the collection is the best way to cover up the body. The reason for fashion is for the purpose of self-expression and to enhance the human body, but instead, it covers and people look as if they have gained weight in the process.
I do commend West for his want to expand on other horizons besides music, and he clearly markets well due to the high demand from consumers, but his overall product lacks any real effort or originality. It’s safe to say that his products are something I can live peacefully without.
