I still remember seeing it on the news like it was yesterday. I still remember the haunting headlines in the papers. On May 3rd, 2010, University of Virginia senior lacrosse player, Yeardley Reynolds Love, was murdered by her ex-boyfriend, three weeks shy of her graduation.
94% of adults in the US will never perpetrate relationship violence against their partner, yet relationship abuse affects one in three women and one in four men in their lifetime.
Yeardley’s story is a tragic one. The Love family is using Yeardley’s tragedy to help others by founding the One Love Foundation to raise awareness of the warning signs of relationship violence.
Relationship violence is an epidemic that can be stopped when young adults are educated and empowered to affect change in their communities. The goal of the One Love Foundation is to honor Yeardley Love by bringing an end to relationship violence by educating, empowering, and activating campus communities in a movement for change.
Yeardley’s story is one that should motivate us to look out for the warning signs in our friends and know that we can make a difference.
