In a time of reboots, remakes and sequels comes a film that is a little bit of all three. “X-Men: Apocalypse” is the sequel to the 2014 movie “X-Men: Days of Future Past” in which the timeline of the franchise was altered, thus changing things that happened in previous films (mostly “X-Men: The Last Stand”). While it may not have received the best reviews or opening weekend at the box office, I really enjoyed watching this installment in the series.

This time Raven/Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Professor Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Peter Maximoff/Quicksilver (Evan Peters) face off against a “god” in the form of Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac), a mutant with many powers who has transferred from many different bodies in order to gain said powers. Apocalypse is joined by his group of “Four Horsemen” which includes the antagonist for many of the films, Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto (Michael Fassbender), as well as newcomers Psylocke (Olivia Munn), Ororo Munroe/Storm (Alexandra Shipp) and Angel (Ben Hardy). Together, their plan is to take down not just humans and not just mutants, but all of the weak that inhabit the Earth.

Back when I started watching films from Marvel Studios, I binge-watched the X-Men series and was kind of surprised that I enjoyed them. I was not used to early 2000s superhero flicks, so watching the original trilogy was weird. I enjoyed them all though; yes, even “X-Men: The Last Stand.” When I watched the series, “The Wolverine” (which is the only one in the franchise that I have not seen yet) had just come out, so I was able to watch “X-Men: First Class” and see the “past” versions of some of the characters which probably got me more interested in the series than any of the other films because I liked the cast more than the originals. Anyway, since I liked that cast so much, I was happy to see that “Days of Future Past” and “Apocalypse” would focus on them rather than the original cast (although “Days of Future Past” featured both sets of characters).

Since I’ve seen the other installments though, there were a few things in “Apocalypse” that I didn’t like. First, I was so confused by the timeline change. I understand that it was needed to basically delete everything that happened in the third film, but now it’s hard to tell what’s canon and what's not. This is more of an issue when thinking about the end of “Days of Future Past” because we see that most of the original cast is alive and well, but with the introduction of some characters in “Apocalypse” it’s now hard to tell what has happened with them. The other issue that I had with this movie is Wolverine’s involvement. I don’t think this is a spoiler because it was revealed in the final trailer that Hugh Jackman was once again playing the popular character. He did help the characters in the one scene that he was in, but it almost seemed like a forced involvement just to build more hype for the film. Also going along with the timeline change, I was stuck thinking about what parts of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” were still canon (see “Deadpool” and his previous appearance in the Wolverine film).

All of that aside, I enjoyed the film with its many new characters (including Sophie Turner who did a great job as young Jean Grey), the easy enough to follow plot and the continuation of the new timeline, even with its somewhat confusing changes. I highly recommend going to see it in theaters if you like the series. You could see it even if you just like the superhero genre, but it would be much easier to follow if you watch the previous installments. If you see the movie, let me know what you think in the comments and maybe also let me know what movies you think I should review in the future because I really enjoy doing this.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
