Writing to me means freedom, it means having a voice, it means expressing, it means creating beautiful pieces from zero and it means wrapping up thought I thought I couldn’t.
Reading to me means flying, it means traveling, it means forming nonexistent places and making them my own, it means being sympathetic with others, it means opening up my mind.
I have been writing and reading small and big pieces since I was very little. Styles change, the topics I am passionate about change, too, but what it is always the same is the feeling I have while words flow though my head from or into a paper.
I decided at the very last minute what I wanted to study in college. At first I wanted to be a vet, then a biologist and then a doctor, because those seemed like the logical answers to what my future profession should be, until I realized that I was not in love with anything about them. Sure, I adore animals and I want to help people and the environment but that was about it. When the time to chose a major came I wanted something that I loved, and something that would allow me to evolve as I grew up and change the way I do things at the same time.
When I read this amazing pieces on the newspapers I get amaze at how some writers can convince me that some story is the most interesting thing that could have ever happened to me, and how life changing knowing about something could be.
I chose to study journalism for how versatile it is; there are thousands of different ways to work on it, so many different topics and areas. It works perfectly for someone like me with thousands of different interests. Not to mention the many places where you can work at, TV, radio, papers, magazines, etcetera. I like the fact that I don’t feel trapped by it.
One of my long term projects is to write a book. While journalism will allow me to be prepared to work as an actual journalist, it will more than anything prepare me to express what I want to say in a compelling manner and convince people that what I have to say is somehow important and relevant in their lives. The fact that I will learn how to arrange pieces for them to have more sense and also to learn to identify what people want to read about sounded like key items to make my dream of being a book author true.
As time goes by, I like re-reading my old creations, and I love the feeling of knowing how much I grow up at the same time as the words I wrote. Same as little moments in life, simple things I read anywhere or wrote somewhere are a piece of me. I aim to get my feelings to show in the words I write because I respect people to do that. I want to communicate sensibility and professionalism as well as imagination and creative thinking and studying journalism will teach me how to do all that and more.
