Why I Write For Odyssey

As a sophomore at a liberal arts college, I think I have reached my crowning stage of ambition. Like many others in my position, I feel a burning desire to change the world. I’m not sure how long this motivation will last, but I do know that, pretty much every waking moment, I long for opportunities to make a difference. It was when I first started reading Odyssey articles that I finally began to see my opportunity. It was the opportunity to make a difference with my words.

Writing for Odyssey has given me the chance to voice my thoughts and opinions on a public and accessible platform. Other millennial thought influencers like myself, who long to change the world, have been waiting for this opening. As a full-time college student, I obviously do not have the ability to take part in a full-time job in journalism. As a result, it has been difficult for content creators like myself to voice their opinions to a larger audience outside of their community. Therefore, this online platform centered toward millennials has finally given thought leaders like me an outlet to voice our thoughts and opinions to readers across the country.

Also, what makes Odyssey unique from other platforms and websites is that content creators are not restricted to any particular topics. As an Odyssey writer, I have the ability to write about whatever I am most passionate about and interested in. Therefore, the writing process becomes much more enjoyable and easier because the topic is my decision. Additionally, I am able to write about what I think is most important. I am able to choose the words that I think will have the highest impact on my readers.

This experience has been extremely rewarding, not only because I can express my thoughts and opinions, but also because people are actually reading what I have to say. As you may have noticed, Odyssey is taking over Facebook. Social media is essential to Odyssey’s success, because Facebook is not restricted to any location, but is easily accessible from iPhones and other smartphones. As a result, 82 percent of audience reads come from mobile devices. Evidently, the majority of modern day society keeps up to date on current events from online social platforms. Therefore, since Odyssey content is shared through Facebook, Odyssey articles are attracting a larger audience.

As a college student, I am generally stuck on a college campus. Consequently, it's difficult to take action on current issues that I would like to take a stand on. But now I have finally found the outlet that I need in order to make a difference. Odyssey gives me the chance to take action with my words. That is why I write for Odyssey.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
