Writing Careers: More Encouragement, Less Doubt

Writers are constantly getting negative comments thrown their way simply because they didn’t chose a career that’s more ideal. A career as a writer can be challenging, but with enough dedication and persistence, people can have a successful writing careers. But most importantly, like any other human being pursuing their dreams, encouragement goes a long way. Here are some negative comments made by non-writers that are washed over with some positive words.

1.) "Writing will get you nowhere in life!"

Wrong, my dear left brain friends! Writing books, poems or whatever it is gives people something to connect to. So my fellow writers, your work plays a big part in helping people have an outlet to escape from reality or to better understand reality through literature.

Also, writing has psychological benefits. While writing, the brain is motivated to organize your ideas so that your thinking process isn’t all over the place. Expressive writing is just as beneficial because it “has…been linked to improved mood, well being and reduced stress levels.”

2.) "You'll Be A Starving Artist!"

Sure, getting a job as a writer may be difficult in the beginning but after all nothing in life is easy, everything requires hard work. J.K Rowling’s Harry Potters books were rejected by 12 different publishing houses and now the first edition of Harry Potter books are worth $6,500. James Paterson’s books were rejected a dozen times but eventually one of his stories were published in a newspapers and in 2014, he made $90 million in a year. I’m not implying that the success of those authors will be the same for every writer, my point lies within the fact that the choice to become an artist is not an automatic invitation to fail.

3.) "Books are dead, technology is taking over!"

Believe or not, there are still a lot of bookworms out there. “Well, where are they?” asks the math major. They can be at a library because they would rather check out a book for free than pay for one on a tablet that has many distractions such as notifications that can pull someone away from their story. Also, in a survey conducted with students by Hewlett-Packward, 57 % of the students chose print textbooks over the 21 % of students that chose online textbooks. What does this mean for writers? It means that writer’s physical books will still have a chance to be acknowledged rather than get lost somewhere on the web.

4.) "You're a terrible writer, quit!"

Those words sting no matter who says them. Those words can cripple a career as it destroys the confidence and faith a writer has in their work. However, it is important to remember that non constructive criticism is no criticism at all. Pay no mind to empty words like those especially if they are followed by “quit.” Every writer has errors in their work, nothing is ever composed of perfection. Giving up is shutting out the right we have as humans to improve ourselves. So, my fellow writers, if you’re ever in a place where you lose inspiration due to negativity, make a list of the reasons why you write to remind you that it will always have a place in your life despite what people say. Only you know the value writing has to your life, don’t let anyone degrade that value because it is yours and will always belong to you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
