Being creative in any aspect is challenging, and writing is no exception. Whether you're reporting the news or writing for others' entertainment, the following thoughts most likely go through your head each time you start a new piece.
1. Is this writer's block?
Nothing is worse than sitting down to write an amazing piece of writing and finding out you have no idea what to write about. You begin to wonder if you will ever think of anything to write about again.
2. Why can't I think of anything to write about?
Soon, thoughts derail into the why of not being able to write. Am I not focused enough? What if I'm just a horrible writer? Your mind goes wild.
3. No, that doesn't sound good.
You may get some thoughts down, but of course it isn't good enough. Backspace, backspace, backspace.
4. This is definitely writer's block.
Now you know for sure.
5. Let me try writing about something I love.
To do something well, you have to love what you're doing, right? It doesn't always go as planned...
6. Shoot, it's been done before.
...because apparently other people love the same things. This leads you to think your brain shouldn't be used for creativity.
7.I'm not creative, why do I write?
The self-doubt sets in, and you consider selling your assets and moving to Mexico.
8. Is writer's block even real, or is it my imagination?
Psychologists, this one's for you to answer.
9. Ooo, this is good stuff!
Finally! An idea hits, and you begin to write a few sentences that actually tie together to form a clear thought!
10. People should strive to be like me.
The confidence is back and you are feeling great! That is, until you realize your great idea is only enough to write a paragraph.
11. Ugh, who am I kidding?
The idea wasn't as great as you originally thought, so you sit there in silence, contemplating your next move.
12. I'm going to start over.
More backspace, backspace, backspace. At this point, hold down the backspace button indefinitely.
This progression of thoughts continues over and over until finally, the idea is strong enough to create an even stronger piece of writing. When completed, the feeling of having accomplished this task gives you more confidence than ever before. And you realize that throughout the process, you were doing what you love all along. Hey, maybe there is something to that saying.
